I saw some schools of black drum near the boat hole. I was throwing a gulp shrimp and the pin perch were thick and tearing the gulp up. They ate the tails off of the gulp shrimp all day long everywhere I went.

I would like to target the black drum with with a bait that the drum will eat, but the perch will steal shrimp in seconds.

What do you black drum fishermen use for bait that stays on the hook, and catches drum?

i was thinking some cut pin perch, because they are easy to get there where i wanna fish.

Thats good you saw some signs of life in the area. Dead shrimp and live shrimp work for me but like you mentioned about the bait stealers. good luck and thanks for sharing.

thats a toughy. Only thing I can add is that when the pinfish were thick at north packery, I would try use cut pitfish as bait, and they would tear that up just as quick as shrimp. Confused

Sea Lice(Mantis Shrimp), Crab are two great baits when you have perch all over the place. They may eat some of the meat off them but you will still have the main portion on the hook and still giving off sent to the Drum.
Good Luck

You should be able to find small whole crab and sealice at the L-head bait stand downtown. Perch will still tear up the sealice. crab might be the trick

I prefer Dead Shrimp on 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook. Tear off the shrimp's head to let more of the scent out. Hook the shrimp from tail end to the head around the circle of the hook. Perch, crab, sting rays, and eels will eat most of anything put on the bottom in the winter.

For economy of scale and effectiveness, dead shrimp has always been a winner for me in bottom fishing. I prefer my Red and Black Drums around 24".

And older pic when I use to live near the water.

Dead shrimp is the way to go for Black Drums.

A great place for Black Drums is down along the JFK Causeway (south side). Maybe 3/4's way down. Wade out about 25 feet and cast into the shallow channel or just above it. Catch merely keeper size Black Drums there. Also, RedFish. Great times are about 10 pm to 1 am. Solitude in that spot. Away from crowds. Of course those dang trot line people are there alot. I can't call that fishing. They might as well throw a dynamite out in the water.

I agree with you 100% redfish chaser. Those guys are the epitomy of meat haulers. I've always had luck fishing on bottom with fresh peeled dead shrimp for drum. I've been next to the power lines this time of year and seen big schools of drum there. I've actually been so close to them before where I took off the weight of my bottom rig and pulled out a few yards of line from the reel and basically free lined dead shrimp and had them hit. Anyways, hoping to make it out tomorrow around that area to see what's going on. Hope to see y'all out there.
