Looking to do some fishing in this area, with no boat/yak, strictly wading from shore. Ive gone around Indian Point Park a number of times, but I am looking for other access points, particularly deeper into Nueces Bay. I did some driving and found that of the roads west of the bridge that go down to the shore are private gated roads. Anybody know of decent access points? (don't need to share hotspots, just a place to get my feet wet, literally and figuratively)

I don't think there is any except for private drives or the river along the corridor.

Thanks guys. PF, thats that little body of water along side the road on the right heading towards portland right? Lined with spartina across the way? If it is, I think Ive been all round that area, both sides of the road. Real pretty back there, but its been very hit/miss when I go there. Probably worth checking out again though...

When we were kids back in the 1970's, we used to fish Nueces back behind the hotel. It is the only one on the road and your first building on the right coming back from Portland. I was really too young to remember everything but my Uncles would drive all the way from Victoria just to fish there so it must be (or have been) good. We also fished Sunset Lake and I remember catching hardheads. I do remember that we used to use wood pallets for rafts and float out in the middle of the lake and swim. That lake is or was so salty that at least three of us could float on a regular pallet....pretty cool. Also, there is a road that goes behind the lake and ends up at Indian Point with the CC bay on one side. The best part of those trips was that my mom would always stop at Der Wienersnitchel on the way home. Chili Cheese dogs were 5 for a dollar back then Very Happy

Ernie

Good stuff tarzan! I've been down that road before behind Sunset Lake, its pretty back there. I betcha the water is pretty damn high in that area in back of Indian Point right now. Never stopped at the Wienersnitzchel on the way back but I always slow down and see if anybody is parked at that sleezy adult video shop back there. That place looks SKEEVY! Razz

Wading in most anywhere along the 181 into Nueces is pretty darn deep mud. There are only a few spotty sandy areas.

Parking under the causeway on the Portland side and wading the causeway at night can be very productive w/ good firm sand bottom. Fish the lights for trout.

You can also wade in down were the portland waterplant creek comes into the bay. There is a shell bar there that you can wade out on and when it ends the bottom is soft but not too soft. Park at the end of W.Bayview Blvd and walk down the dirt road at the dead end. Spot can be decent early.

Or you can pay $5 to park at the Portland's Sea Breeze Rv Park. You can also wade in from there.

Past the Sea Breeze Rv park, everything to Whites Point and beyond is private and off limits.

Hope that helps a bit. Shoot me a pm if you need more detail.

Nueces Bay is dead on. . . .be careful wading around in Nueces, even from road side. I have thought of just laying down for dead rather than trying to wade back through some of that mud. Shocked The Portland Shoreline is a great wade!!!
