Some of you may know that Rob and I are in the map business. Along with my partner Van, we have been collaborating on an online map of South Texas. We think its pretty cool. Of course its different than Google and Map Quest. It may be a little slower, but we think we offer a lot of things that they don't.
The reason I am posting it here is because I think fishermen will find it useful. People are always posting questions about where is this or where is that. Right now, we have over 1400 points of interest along the coast (from Sargent to the Rio Grande) that can be searched for (reefs, piers, boat ramps, etc). We haven't located IMS's honeyhole yet, but we are working on it.
Home page: http://www.stxmaps.com/index.cfm
Coastal Search page (you can also search from the Map page):http://www.stxmaps.com/exploring-the-texas-coast.cfm
Map page:http://www.stxmaps.com/map/Default.cfm
The map also has the most accurate and up to date street map available anywhere. We have birdwatching sites, we are working on adding festival locations, historical markers and a whole lot more.
This thing is not finished, in fact its been undergoing major changes on almost a daily basis. We are worried about how much traffic our server can handle, so posting it here is a test. We would also like to hear any feedback. And if anyone wants to post this on one of the other boards, feel free to do so.
A couple of technical things. Works best in Firefox, screen resolution should be at least 1024*768, use only single clicks - not double clicks. |

I laughed, I cried, I hurled!
Just kidding, it is very slick and works great. There is even a blurb on the Big Shell Cleanup at PINS. (It helps to have friends in the map business) |

Thanks for the replies, we really appreciate them & wish we could get some more. I have been monitoring the server closely all weekend. It has been hit pretty hard but it did well I think. A lot of people viewed the map. We even have one visit from Kazakhstan & one from Japan. I'm thinking probably a couple of our fine Corpus Fishing military guys or gals had a look. We sure would like some more feedback from you on if it was too slow or too hard to use or whatever. Because of all the map can do & the calculations it has to perform every time someone moves around the map it will never be lightning fast but if you are patient it will do it's thing. I really thought having as many people view it as it has the last 2 days the server would crap out but I never saw a significant slow down. It's no slouch of a server, it has 4 processors etc in it but the program running the map is extremely server resource intensive so.... I'm going to leave The South Texas Map up to see how it does when all my normal traffic starts hitting it tomorrow. If it slows my customers we will have to make other arrangements. There was and still is enough traffic on it to justify moving forward. The server is getting hit hard right now & there were several even during the Super Bowl.
We have worked really hard on this thing the last year. Please help us out buy letting us know what problems you have with it, what you don't like & of course what you do like. Sounds like a good excuse for a Porch meeting to me. Speaking of The Porch, do a coastal search for it. I bet it shows up for you.
Thanks for your help in the test & Bluffer please let us know what problems you had so we can get them solved.
Thanks,
Rob |

yep, found the Porch. As for future Porch meetings , they are currently on hold until some much needed remodeling is finished. Not that it really needed any but now maybe my wife might step inside when finished. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I don't see anything wrong with it at all. It's got more detail then I've see before. I have looked for maps for a long time.
As for patient, never saw a fishinig person yet that wasn't. If they are there just bait killers. _________________ Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock.
