Took the kayak out in some fun and windy conditions over by Humble channel. Tried some new fishing tips and I can say at least I caught something this time.
I caught several stingray on gulps dragged on bottom and live pinperch. Stingrays were everywhere. I also caught some of the largest Piggy perch I have seen. ( Are these any good to eat at this size?) I did get to watch some extremely happy Fishermen pull in a large drum and then release it.
He is a solid 12 inches
Also does anyone know what kind of shrimp this is?
All in all while nothing came home with me At least I got to get out on the water. And isn't that the point of it all? (So say all who don't catch anything) |

| Are there different types of mantis shrimp? I have fished with Mantis shrimp before but not seen any that looked like that. |

What you have there is a Gulf coast pink shrimp. Far less common than the brown or white shrimp:

| That looks like a rock shrimp to me. I bought some awhile back from a seafood shop in AP. The shells were harder than heck but once i got them pealed and cooked they were delicious. Tasted like lobster. I dont think they are found in our waters though. Where did you get that one? |

We used to have a investment on a shrimp boat back in the 80's and i remember as a kid my grandad called those "Rock Shrimp". They were not that good to eat from what i remember but they did great when fishing for Catfish in the Aransas river.
Thats my 2 cents on that ugly little shrimp.
Keep on Fishing

Definetly looks like a rock shrimp, haven't seen or eaten those since living in Florida years ago. They are good steamed.

| I kept a couple of those large piggy perch recently to fry along with a few mangrove snapper. Snapper filet was solid white, but the piggy filet had a significant red line in it - corresponding to the fish's lateral line. I just cut it away and made two filets out of each side. Tasted good in a fish taco! |

I've found that's the way to eat those big perch...just cut the fillets in 1/2 down the bloodline and trim it out. Removing the bloodline makes a huge difference in taste. They put up a pretty good fight too...fun on ultralight gear.
