Oso Bay Gill Net found
This came from a friend yesterday, i'm just posting it for everyone's information:
Fellow anglers and Law enforcement agent,
While exploring a section of Oso Bay sight casting for redfish, my cousin and I were paddling the western end of the old abandon rail road track bridge in Oso Bay off of Waldron road in Flour Bluff. I was about 50 yards west of the center power pole west of the Oso Tracks when I hooked up with a yellow rope. I paddled to get my fishing line free from the rope when I came upon a gill net. I followed the gill net rope and it stretched from the northern bank of the Oso to almost the southern bank. Parallel to the power lines, at the end of the gill net was a white PVC pipe at a 45 degree angle and at the northern bank was a old pipe that the other end of the gill net was attached to. We managed to free what seemed like over 30 redfish that were still alive and a lot were left that were dead including a dead duck that was tangled.
I noticed while I was doing this I was being watched. There was a older model (Early 80's) Ford F 150 super cab two tone blue with what looked like a small boat behind it and a man by the tailgate watching me with binoculars.
The gill net was over 200 yards in length. By the time we decided to go ahead and call Operation Game theft 1-800-792-4263 to dispatch a game warden to our spot, but the line was busy. After several attempts to call with no avail, we decided to leave the area because other truck were showing up and it looked like we were going to be in danger. I did not have the phone number to TPWD office here in corpus so we cautiously made our way back to the bank. Upon reaching the bank of the rail road tracks, I noticed the Ford F 150 was parked near us. I saw the man that was looking at us with binoculars and he was standing on top of the rail road track looking down at me to see if I had taken any of his fish from the gill net. As soon as I pulled up on the bank he immediately asked me if I had caught anything, I noticed that he didn't have a fishing rod with him and he was not there to fish. I responded that we caught a few rat reds and a flounder so we decided to leave. By the time I was able to walk out of the muddy bog, I saw him get into the ford truck that was suspiciously parked so I could not get his license plates.
I did get a description of the man. He was about 35-45 years in age, slender build, about 120 to 140 pounds, Black hair with a beard he looked anglo not hispanic. he was wearing a orange ski, blue jeans, a flannel long sleeve shirt, mask and rubber boots. But by the time I got out of the water, he was making his way back to the truck. We left the area and preceded back to my home where I called the local TPWD office. I spoke to a secretary and she said there were no Game Wardens in the office that she would have one call me within the hour. I cot a call about 15 minutes later form a game warden where I told him the same story. He said he would make sure and follow up on it.
I am just following up on this issue because this is a serious issue. There were several redfish in that gillnet and these poachers need to be caught.
Click on this link to see the map and coordinates of where the gill net is at or was at:

I emailed TPWD, CCA, Operation Game Theft, and the president of the CCA Chapter here in Corpus. So far no reply's I don't know what you can do. Maybe they ( the Game Wardens) are waiting for him to check it. This gill net had over 30 keeper redfish on it and a ton of undersized reds and a few tangled dead ducks. I will keep you updated on this.

Thanks for taking action. I hope the GW was able to confiscate the net or better yet catch the guy. If you see him again be sure to get the liscense number on the truck. This will help the GW get the guy.
There are still quite a few outlaws out there and we all need to do our part to see that they are caught. These guys are particularly active during the winter when the boat traffic is down. |

These aren't the kind of guys you want mad at you. They obviously have no problem conducting illegal activities.
It was actually pretty brave, not to mention admirable, to remove the fish from the net. While the guy was watching.
I think that a call to the GW is the best approach to this situation. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

You're certainly correct on that. Criminals aren't known for brains, self control and good judgement, that's why they wind up in jail!!! _________________ Dave

best that we can hope for is HE falls in and gets caught in his own net and drowns. would probably kill a lot of fish from the smell. o well, we can only hope he gets caught and PUNISHED. _________________ ccbobber |

Dude, prison wastes WAY too much tax money and WAY too many lives. At least once a week some thug who was out on parole or because of "overcrowding" kills someone.................................. ELSE!!!!! I say fry the ^%$#@*& and be done with it. It may not be a deterrent as the libs often cry about, but a dead man has never committed another crime!

I wonder who is buying their fish? i'm sure its not for self consumption. The ones doing the buying and selling again are the ones with money in their pockets. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |
