i always fish it and i like to grill um skins on, give it a little half shell thing going on. another tip, they all die anyway so ii use them to bait crab traps, thisis a cheap fun way to find bait for the traps _________________ Gone Fishing

The fish are small so use 2-4# test and the smallest gold hook you can buy and a split shot. When you get to the stocked pond chum with a small handful of corn. Use corn or Velveta cheese for bait. We use two ploes one near the chum and one to locate fish casting and moving every few minutes.

| Be prepared for "combat fishing". The last time I went (Blanco State Park), there about 50 people casting to one school of rainbows. It was chaotic. |

i already marked it on my calender. i caught a couple last year at waldron pond...but there really wasnt too many people there. it'll probably be different this year huh? i think im gonna use the smallest bobber i can find this year...there is just something about watching that float sink under the surface...i love it! not as aggresive as specks but still a lot of fun. _________________ "When times are tough,

Personally, one of the WORST disappointments of my life happened when I was about 14 and caught, cleaned and cooked my first rainbow trout. All of the previous years of reading about what great fighters they were and how great eating they were were just blown to hell in a handbag!!!! The stockers taste TERRIBLE......................... just like the fish food that they eat at the hatchery! YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF [and this is a big if] you can catch the larger ones that have #1 been in the river a good while and #2 been feeding and growing on other fish and crawdads, they are darn good when brined and smoked. Tastes just like the $$$ smoked salmon that you buy in the store. I wouldn't give a plugged nickle for all of the 10-14" hatchery fish in the river though. To each their own. _________________ Dave

Yes, don't assume the hatchery guys taste the same as wild ones or those who have been off of the hatchery chow for a while. Big difference. Personally I like the sea run versions of rainbows - steelhead, and sea run cutthroat and Dolly Varden the best. But for fishing with kids they little hatchery guys are fun to catch though a bit bland tasting. |

I used to REALLY be in to trout fishing. After all, the world record Brown was caught not an hour and 20 minutes north of here in the Little Red River and the past few former world record browns were caught in the upper setions of the White, about 3 hours north of here. In the latter they have the diet that I was alluding to: big natural prey like suckers, chubs, sculpins and crawdads, along with the typical river/stream insects. In the the former, there is almost NOTHING in their diet but scuds:

These fish aren't even all that good when brined and smoked. The fish from the White River on the other hand taste great, if you like the taste of salmonids. Personally, I'd just as soon fry up some fresh caught bass! _________________ Dave

Quite a sight here in SA too. You see everything from bottles used as fishing reels, hand lines, cane poles to surf rods.
