What rifle do you shoot for deer? Let us know what make, model and caliber or any other detail that might be cool.
P.S. Another poll for caliber, I am curious what the #1 in S. Texas is. _________________ V/R,

I used to shoot a Remington 721 (precursor to the 700, same action just a little different bolt handle, trigger guard and stock) in .270 Win, I just did not need that much power so I now shoot a Remington 700 ADL in .243 Win. the gun is great can carry it all day and not feel it. Every deer I have shot with it has been dead on the ground with 1 shot to the vitals I shoot a .95gr Federal Fusion bullet when I am hunting. Great bullet/gun combination. _________________ V/R,

I've shot deer w/ just about everything except a shotgun...Bow, Rifle, .357mag revolver. I'm going to take one w/ a shotgun when I get a lease again, just to finish out the big 4. Then I'll buy a muzzle loader since that hasn't been covered yet either, but that's more like shooting w/ a rifle, & I really don't see the difference - not that it's a bad thing - modern muzzles are about equivelent to 30-30's in trajectory these days...
Anyway, I used to use a 7mm, although the first deer i shot I was 9, and took it by sitting on my dad's lap w/ his .270. He past away 2 years this Dec. 2. If I had a lease, I'd take that gun out and shoot a deer in his memory...Maybe next year. However, I'll be hunting the week of the Anniversary of his passing up in Del rio on a bowhunt, and I guarantee I'll be thinking about him.
Anyway, back to the subject - I'd bet .270 will probably be the most popular caliber. I personally now shoot a 22-250 w/ hand loaded 55gr Sierra Game King boat tails. I went to that gun (Howa 1500) after a shoulder injury almost killed my hunting season. I was very leary of the caliber - but I did some research and used the right TYPE of bullet, and the internal damage from the hydrostatic shock is imense. The first deer I took with it was shot in the shoulder (as I cringed praying I wouldn't loose the deer) It a was a Bang - Flop @ 160. The second was with my son 2 weeks after dad died - same thing 8pt, bang - flop. I've killed several hogs in the head, and took a couple of does w/ neck shots. The thing shoots a group the size of a quarter at 100yds. Best thing is I don't flinch, because it doesn't kick.
That being said, I still don't advocate this caliber for every shooter - I use it because (I'm not bragging) I'm a good shot, I reload my own rounds very precisely, and I use the right TYPE of bullet. Second, shot placement is ultra critical for these smaller calibers. Since I reload I get to practice quite a bit - My direct cost for my premium, hand trickled to the exact charge every bullet is $6.30/ box. Or about 3 boxes to the one factory round. Most 22 cal. bullets that are factory produced for this caliber are for vermin, and designed to explode on impact. Not the right choice for deer. My son will use my Dad's 270 on his first deer when he is old enough to handle it. I was 9.
I'd say any caliber based off the old 30-06 would be the best all around for South TX i.e. 25-06, 260, 270, 280 etc, w/ the 243 being a Very close 2nd. I base that off a combo of Trajectory and ft-lbs. 7mm rem mag would be optimum, as far as trajectory and lb-ft, but is starting to get into the heavier recoil. (I do love my 7mm rem mag - my wife shoots it) 300mags & above are just big bore club members, and are great for bragging about how much they kick the @#$% out you, and are perfect for Elk & bear...not too many of those down here. Not a bad choice for Nilgai though...I used to have one of those too -I traded it for my 22-250. Talking about going from one extreme to the other.
That's my opinion... Like they say, everyone has one! Sorry for rambling _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |

Around 1959 a Boder Partolman put a .243 together for me with a Mauser action, a Douglas barrel and a walnut stock with a 4X weaver scope on it. I still shoot it and it has knocked down many a deer (mostly bucks) since then. Also my three sons and one grandson all killed there first deer with it. They nicknamed it "Old Radar" _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

Currently shoot a Remington 788 in 6mm
My father gave me his Remington 742 Woodmaster .308 and I am currently waiting a new stock and fore end and new rings and bases. I am probably going to give the 6mm to my wife since she has taken up hunting and the .308 will be my primary rifle. My dad says its the most accurate rifle he has ever owned. He now shoots a .280. |

| Started hunting at age 10 witth 30-30 win that I wish I had back. now own 270, 243,6mm rem,30-06, 300 wtby mag. my choice for hunting deer would have to be the 6mm .Flat trajectory and fast. All the others is for playing in the back yard.I do load every shell I shoot.I wish I had all the powder and bullets back that Io have burned up in my fields here. The wthby was a waist of money, but always wanted one.I would say the 270 to be most used and desired state wide from what I have seen. All of the calibers are good hunting weapons. Its just up to each persons desire. |

I shoot a Browning A-bolt w/the Boss in 7mm Mag. I use Remington 150gr bullets and it's a tack driver. I love it. The deer and hogs don't go anywhere but down.
I also have a Remington 788 in 22-250 that I killed a lot of deer and hog with also. I have passed it down to my 11 yr old son and he is doing very well with it. It's all about shot placement, head and neck shots usually. It's a great gun in the right hands. |

I shoot a 243 Winchester Mod. 70 given to me by my grandfather in 1968 to go along with a mule deer and antelope hunt in Wyoming that was all my 18th birthday present(ok -now you know how old I am(21 with 37 yrs of experience). It had a K-6 Weaver on it that I just changed about two weeks ago. I have dropped more animals than I can count with this rifle, including Wyoming antelope. When I was a bit younger and could still see well without glasses, I have killed numerous deer and hogs that were running, with this gun. It has the "no miss" feature built in I guess, because I have missed only twice with this gun in 40 years. Once I hit a tree limb that was too close to the blind to see in the scope and the other was when I was shooting from the ranch foreman's truck on the O'Connor, he hit the gas when his foot slipped off the brake.
I have shot handloads as well as factory loads and the difference is very little, if you stack with premium ammo with a 100 grain bullet
I have a 7mag, a 300 savage, 222, & a 223, but the trusty 243 is my rifle of choice for south texas hunting, plus I never go hunting without thinking of my grandfather, beacuse he was my hunting partner for 25+ years until his death in 1988. If thsi gun is with me, I know he is too. |

what rifle?
depends what day
On opening weekend, I use the 30-06 Model 70 my father gave me. It was the only deer rifle he ever owned, and I haven't changed a thing on it. The scope is a straight weaver 4X, and the reticle is slightly canted by about 5 degrees.... drives me nuts, but that's the way he used it for 30 years.
after that my go-to gun is a slightly modified remington 700 7mm mag. I have a 4.5-14 VXIII on it and this gun will shoot 1/2 MOA. Off the shelf it shot sub MOA, and after a bedding job, trigger adjustment and recrowning, it's probably the best shooting rifle I've owned.
My new doe and pig gun is a bushmaster predator with a 20" heavy fluted barrel..... these things are a fricken blast to shoot. I highly recommend them
for anyone looking to buy... it's hard to beat a remington 700 for out of the box accuracy. I know other guns shoot well, but you rarely hear about a lemon M700. |

| 30-06, 25-06, .270 usually use the 30-06 but the 25-06 is my fav., but price of shells has skyrocketed and I need to add a diff. scope. |
