Chris and I ran down this weekend in search of Jack Crevale opportunities on a fly rod. Over the years we’ve caught more than our fair share on conventional tackle but you can literally count the number on both hands we’ve caught using a fly rod. Chris and Justin both out score me in this department and as of last weekend, you could count all of the ones I’ve caught on the fly with “one finger”. Having said this you can understand what a hoot it was this weekend for me to catch three more jacks on a fly. Adding to this, they were caught on a fly pattern that I came up with and tied myself.
Like clock work the Jacks showed up both mornings to dine on finger mullet in the wade gut. Saturday morning we had a few slicks where you could smell them feeding on menhaden and they weren’t too far from the slicks. Birds were marking the larger concentrations of mullet. This is a spot and stalk type of expedition in search of targets. During the search we saw lots of smaller groups were there were only one two or three fish and these proved almost impossible to catch. When we would find five to twenty jacks in an area our odds improved. On both days we had numerous fish take the fly and miss the hookup. In light of the missed hookups, we found that our hooks had dulled from the previous day. All of the Jacks were working south into the current and the better opportunities came where the deepest part of the wade gut touched the bank. Moving Pelicans were quite an obstacle when we got hooked up. At one point Chris and I were both hooked up at the same time and our lines crossed. About the same time we had a pelican fly into Chris’s line and become tangled. This lead to him being cut off and losing his $60.00 fly line. On Saturday the Jacks feed until 10 AM and on Sunday they cut off at 9:00 AM
As for the rest of the weekend we only caught a few Spanish Mac’s and some really big Skipjacks. Fresh weed moved ashore on Saturday evening and the entire beach was covered north of the 45 on Sunday. Water color was really muddy south of the 45 on both days and I would suspect mostly due to the dredge operations at Port Mansfield. The dredge spoil area is growing in size and I would say it’s going to really change the look down there. At present, there is no way to access the north jetty or the channel and your only going to get stuck if you try and drive out on the fresh spoil pile. Here are a few pictures of the three Jacks, the dredging operations and the birds & fresh weed in the 30s.

| I've only caught a few jacks in the 20-30# range and can't imagine how awesome it would be to battle one on a fly rod. Congrats! |

Thanks for the report Charlie and great pics as usual. It really gives you great pride when you fool them on fly you tied or a lure you made yourself.
