This was interesting.
"The most restrictive proposal involves a three month flounder closure. If this passes, then no commercial or recreational harvesting would be allowed during the fall-winter spawning season. Of course, lowering the bag limit or raising the minimum length also could be part of a management proposal."....
"A three-month closure from October through December would double the flounder population within four years, according to the department's computer models. A one month November closure would result in a 54 percent increase in population after four years. An October-November closure would boost the population by 84 percent, according to the model."

They are looking for input on the subject.....
"Texas Parks & Wildlife is conducting coast wide scoping meetings on Flounder and will be in our area on Wednesday, November 19 at the Aransas County District Courtroom at 301 N. Live Oak in Rockport, Texas. They are seeking input in these outreach groups on Flounder regulations. The meetings begin at 6 pm." |

| I am not for closure or seasons for any fish species. However, I would not be opposed to limiting the method of harvesting (e.g. gigging) during October - December. Fish taken by rod-n-reel should be allowed. It's really easy to differentiate a fish taken by gig vs. hook and line. |

| I say do whatever it takes to bring them back, just as long as recreational fishermen are not penalized over commercials. I seriously doubt gigging takes more than commercials. That being said, gigging is "stabbing", not fishing. Clearly it is legal and a lot of people get a thrill out of it. I'm not one - I like the presentation, the take and the tug of fishing with rod and reel, but that's just me. |

This is just a feeling....but I think the measures that will be taken to increase the flounder population back to the way it was in the '80s will be a drastic change for both commercial and sportsfishermen. After reading some of the studies the TP&W has done over the past 5 years and the fact
that it is very hard to restock flounder, it seems the only route to getting
the flounder back to the populations TP&W is looking for is to shorten the season, cut back on limits for both commercial and sportsfishmen.
The fact that the flounder won't reproduce in captivity like the redfish
will cause a very slow comeback.

| I like catching them and giging them. I would be for lob\wer bag limits, and possible closure if thats what it takes, but I hope they dont ban gigging all together. The smell of coleman lanterns burning brings back alot of fun memories. I |

By making them a game fish that would make them illegal to gig. |

| Commercial takes way more than sport of any kind. Remember redfish? Shrimper drags are incredibly efficient on flounder. Something to think about. |

I gig and enjoy it. I also like to catch flounder on rod and reel. I don't want to the season shortened/closed. Even a reduction in a daily bag limit will probably not make a significant impact, I believe, because the sport fisherman is not at the crux of the problem. 20 to 10 a day hasn't seem to help, nor 12 to 14 in. size limit. But poler's allowed 60 fish a day, and that's year round, plus the mortality rate from trawlers is what I believe is the main reason for the steady decline. I strongly support the buy-back program and would want to see a big change in commercial bags.
To be fair I'd go to 15 in. and 8 fish, if commercial went to 20 a day. My .02, D. |
