I like the surgeon's loop. A hook dangles freely on the loop like it would on a swivel, but without the swivel. I try to make the loop pretty small.

my 2 favorites are the double surgeons knot, and my own version of the rapala loop knot. i found out leaving out one of the steps that its faster to tie and just as strong thus making it the ims loop. But for other types of fishing i use other knots.

Palomar will maintain line strength and Bimini Twist is a must for big fish because it creates a shock leader.

I would use a homemade wire leader do not trust tourist leaders. If you do not feel comfortable making your own, Nick at Break-A-Way makes great leader system and you will pick up casting distance. . Roy's has shark leaders for bigger sharks.

Trout no leader
Flounder 20# leader
Slot Reds, sheep head, drum 30 # leader
Spanish, Tarpon, Bull Reds, Shark, Kings and Surf fishing use wire leader

I never seem to have the patience to sit down and tie a Bimini, so I learned to cheat a double line with a spider-hitch.

Yeas ago my BIL and I did some unscientific testing while drinking bear: We took brand new mono in the 10 lb range and tied a hook to it three times each with the clinch knot and the palomar, using the same hook every time. Then we put the hook around a drum stick and rolled the tag end around a drum stick and pulled until something gave. All three clinch knots broke at the knot: all three palomar knots broke somewhere up the line.................

I've used it up to 80 Flouro leaders for jigging offshore. It is a little bulky, but definitely manageable. and it works great. I watched some fishing show a while back where they'd been doing a knot-test tournament. I only saw the final match up, but it looked like they made a bracket with quite a few knots, probably 16-20. using scientific equipment so they could actually measure the breaking strength, the Palomar was the winner. After seeing that, I try to use it as much as possible.
