I took my wife and kids to the Cancun Mexico Restaurant in the Bluff Sunday afternoon - 8-17-08.
The chips where old and the food has been better but we had an OK time.

The service was not bad but I gave a decent tip anyway.

Well a few minutes ago I was going over my checking account while online and noticed the amount was for 3.80 more then I wrote down.
This is not the first time a waiter has added to his tip but it WILL BE THE LAST TIME I EAT IN THAT RESTURANT!

In the morning I will stop by the Constables office and have a talk with them.

Waiters like this piss me off!

That sucks man and is WAY out of line! Evil or Very Mad

As to the earlier part about leaving a crappy waiter/waitress a good tip: That's not much different than appeasing a dictator, they are both being rewarded for bad behavior! I purposely leave very small tips for bad service just so that morons KNOW that I didn't forget! Twisted Evil

John, before you go to the constables office, I might be able to explain your situation.. I'm a GM for a restaurant here in San Antonio.. Since internet banking got popular, I've fielded hundreds of call from customers with the same problem you had. Come to find out that some(not all) banks will automatically add a 20% gratuity to you credit card transaction regardless of whether you left a cash tip or a gratuity less than 20%.. Acccording to the banks, this will insure that there are funds in the account to cover any tip written on the voucher.. Most restaurants will batch their credit cards at the end of the night. When the bank recieves the actual amount of your transaction, that amount you see online right now will be changed to the correct amount. Usually takes a couple of business days. One way to check is, if you left a cash tip, that 3.80 should be 20% of your bill.. If you left a tip on the card, then that 3.80 should be the difference between the tip you left and 20% of your original bill...

Hope I'm right about this... If I'm not, then bust him or her!!!

This happens on my debit card at lots of restaurants but when it finally does come across charged it is correct. My wife will buy taquitos for the folks at work and I have a hard time keeping up what the actual amount is. First it is posted with the gratuity in the pending charges and then when it actually posts, the correct amount is there.

My son the sailor also learned about using credit cards at the local exoctic clubs.....better to pay cash at those places they will hold a hundred bucks back until everything clears the bank. I still have a hard time understanding that, but they can do it. Question

Before you check into a hotel and give the card to hold the room the hotel puts a pre-authorization for the room amount +. It clears at 12:01 AM the day after you check out or the following business day. Same thing happens most of the time when you "run a tab" at a club or bar. they ask and get a pre-authorization on the card usually $100.00 - again it clears the business day after you close the tab.

Never understood the reasons given for any of it as it always seemed pretty straight forward they were playing with MY money....

What business does a bank have adding anything to my debit charge???????????? A bank doesn't need to concern itself with my tipping of service. My bank hasn't done that yet or if it has I haven't caught it. I would be one mad you know what if it did.

First off I'm not new to purchasing with a debit card at restaurants or this one for that matter. Like I said this is not the first time this has happened and it has happened more then once at this one. I let it go the first time but no more!

My bank DOES NOT add 20% gratuity to what I charge EVER, If they did I would not bank with them either.

The amount that is run first is always the pretip and then three days later in will adjust to the amount with the tip. This charge is 3.80 above the amount with tip.

I thought tipping was optional based on how good your service was. I will start paying attention to the auto tipping thing and will not eat at these establishments.

I honestly feel I have a right to refuse to tip when the service blows.

Do you know how many people would not catch that. Probably alot. It adds up if you are doing it to every customer.

I worked for a credit card company for 5 years and never heard that before. I know like IMS stated about the 100 deposit thing (friends told me) Wink but other than that it is not the normal practice to "hold" more than what the purchase amount was for. Sounds fishy to me. Not on the banks part but the merchant. Perhaps it was a typo on their end?? I know you said its happened more that once though so cant help there. When the sales draft gets submitted to the bank it should only go thru with the amount you agreed on. Anymore sounds like someones pockets are getting bigger and its not yours. You can always dispute anything on your credit or debit card and eventually get your money back. Fastest way would be to take it up with the merchant direct

Happened to me at the La Playa on PID by Rodd field.. and it was a pick up order. Paid my 19.38 for dinner and a couple of days later I checked my acct. Showed a point of sale for $23.98.

Now I pay with cash only.

Get a USAA credit card. They don't do any of that. Best credit card available according to consumer reports.
