I'm heading down to San Juan and i was planning on doin a little fishin. Never been fishin down there so i have no idea of where to, or what to fish for. Are there any jetties, piers, or just a good area of beach that can be accessed with 2WD? Any info would be great. THANKS!

Unless you are going to fish the Rio Grande, San Juan is about 70 miles from South Padre Island.

well i was planning on going either to port isabel or spi to isla blanca park to the jetties has anyone fished the jetty there or pirate pier in p. isabel

don't waste your time or money at the piers. unless you hit it right with the tides switching out. but that's the only way you can get your money's worth. now that its summer time i'm sure they are up to $3.00 a rod $3.00 a person, assuming they don't jack it up after dark like they sometimes like to do...

as for the jetties at isla blanca... you're best bet would be to fish there. walk the jetty until you are where they rocks start having big gaps in between and look for bait. pink snapper action should be heavy, unless you are there in the middle of the week.

now if you want to fish the bay and have some decent luck with live shrimp, hit the area by the coast guard station. wade out to about waist deep water and toss out a shrimp with an alameda rattler or any type of popping cork. keep a short leader on it, probably about 14"-18" would be good enough. decent trout and red action in that area. just watch out for rays b/c the bottom is sandy there and they like to stay in the pot holes.

Years ago I would spend 1 out of every 4 weeks in the valley on business. Would go to the turning basin at the Brownsville ship channel. Fished off the rocks with mirror lures and would usually catch some pretty nice specs. Don't know if it is still a good spot. Good luck.

its a great spot to fish, but only problem is after 9/11, the port was closed for a very long time to shore fishermen, i don't know for a fact if it is open to shore fishermen now, but it was only accessible by boat. when i left the valley in 2002 it was still closed off to shore fishermen. i'm sure a simple phone call in advance will help you out. btw, those same areas Ed mentioned hold snook too Smile

i did forget to mention one thing though...

you can access the surf on SPI, but you will have to pay. i think its 3 or 4 dollars, but make sure you hit it early if you only have a 2wd. the sand can get really torn up and sometimes can be a headache if you are trying to leave late at night. the exits are poorly marked at best, so if you are not familiar i'd say don't stay out past dark. make sure you bring a shovel, tow strap, and plenty of beach currency.

just a suggesstion but if you are planning on going by yourself, i'd fish isla blanca park. it'd be a whole lot safer and you won't get stuck in the sand.
