| Was able to make it down this past weekend. The conditions were almost perfect. Friday night we got in around 1015 and decided to try bob hall pier as i heard they were doing pretty good on trout, after getting settled in we got to the pier around 1230a and noticed some keepers being brought in. Threw a live shrimp and bam, between my buddy and i we caught around 6 very nice sized trout but everytime we brought them up they shook there head and off they went. Being the bite was on it didnt faze us as we would just catch another one. Well of course the bite turned off and all we had was 1 fish to show for it. Also caught 1 17in whiting. Saturday we decided to try the surf as the water was too nice not to. Ended up catching smaller whiting and of course our friend the hardhead, nothing on the big rods. Wtih nothing to get excited over we took the boat out and only managed dinks. Got back to the house around 630 turned on the bbq pit for some grubb and got ready for bob hall again. I ended up taking a nap and didnt get up until 11 or so and by the time we got there it was another carbon copy of friday with a little less seaweed, as soon as i walked on a guy brough in a trout that was 24in, of course that got me pumped up and too work we went. We "hooked" some very nice ones probably averaging 17 to 20 with same results no drop net no fish. We must of attempted to bring up around 10 fish that fell off that would have made the cut saturday night. We did end up landing 3 keepers however. Then the bite turned off around 230ish am. Sunday morning woke up to beautiful skies and decided to try around bird island. Went just past yarborough pass where we caught 4 keepers to 21in and lots of dinks. With little sleep and nothing in our stomaches we decided to call it ealier and head back the house around 130p. |

Were you using regular hooks?
Try using either wide-gap ( hard to shake) or circle hooks (impossible to shake) next time. Use a 5-0 or 6-0 size. Plent of room for the shrimp and a perfect corner hook every time with the circle hooks! _________________ GOBZA!!!

I guess it worked but came out different than other posts...oh well as long as the picture came out.
I was using a 6/0 treble hook. Thought about switching over to a circle hook after the fact. I think i just got caught up in the moment........ill just say im on the catch and release program. Yeah right, Considering the prices of gas and everything else involved w/taking a trip i always try and take my share. People may disagree however being from out of town its not all the time i can get out there, theres limits for a reason regardless what everyone says & i believe we should be entilted to some of our resources. I know there's hype about what if u limit out every day or take however many everyday, in that case to me as being a sports fisherman and practicing my share of conservation, its upto every individual to know how much they really need and to leave the rest. Of course this isnt a perfect world so i probably shouldnt even go there. |

Right there with you on the take your share part - usually we don't even get that much
The circle hooks would've probably done a little better, but I've been in your shoes when it comes down to getting caught in the action.
Nice trout, Fins - the longest one was HUNGRY! Very skinny...odd almost for surf.
BTW, John, we had a circle hook thrown on a jumped fish off of PINS this weekend - I was baffled. It was hooked up for a good amount of time also, so I am sure it was set. Maybe it was just hooked in a weak spot and tore out.

Hell, I'd would have kept them too. Those trout look starved!
If in Corpus, I would only ever keep a couple so I had an excuse to go back out. "Honey, we are out of fresh fish, time to go get some more." However, living in San Antonio, when I have gotten back down (only twice since being up here) I would have doen the same. If I caught a limit, a limit would have went home with me. When you don't hit the water often, therre is nothing wrong with stocking up the freezer!
Shawn, stranger things have happened. I remember as a kid through some sort of topwater with grandpa on the flats reeling in a pair of trout lips! Really! I "overset" the hook. Trout have very soft mouths, and if the hook doesn't catch in the corner, it could end up pulling loose, very easily. The same could happen with other fish as well.
Sometimes its a huge blue crab too. I started carrying a small piece of my wife's old pantyhose in the tackle box, and if that happens, I put a piece on the hook and put it right back where it was, and if its Mr. Pinchers, he's going for a ride! The pantyhose snags in their claws and they cant let go when they hit the surface or the sandbar. Have taken home a few really big plate size crabs that way. _________________ GOBZA!!!

| Those are some nice fish, will make an excellent fish fry. Nothing wrong in keeping a mess of fish for a dinner, and knowing you caught them makes it even better. |
