Last Saturday we caught 36 trout and a couple reds, and as promised I said I'd post this pic of this deformed bull red. Your guess is as good as mine, I'm leaning towards a birth defect or it had something like fishing line rapped around it's midsection and tapered its supple bum end. Either way, the nasty critter was released to bite another line and make another fisherman do a doubletake.

I have seen several reds, a blacktip and a few trout with similar problems. I will have to hunt down what the TPW biologists had to say on that. Thanks for the photo!

Tyler - Like you I have seen these with marine fishes as well as largemouth bass when I was briefly with Inland Fisheries. It could be a genetic abnormality or an injury during an early developmental stage.

Ohhh! You let it go? Surprised

Now it's gonna breed and next year the flats will be full of little twisted redfish. Smile

I have seen several reds like that as well as a catfish and a bass.

I was under the impression that it was a birth defect in fish.
