| I try to avoid the Island on holidays. If it is nice weather, everyone and their dog will be there. Don’t try to drive back on Monday afternoon. It might take a few hours to get over the bridge. That being said, the best time to fish is when you have time. The weekenders will be bunched up in the first few miles. Once you get past them, it will be great. Look for the birds. They will not be far from the fish. I have never been able to read the surf, but I have learned to look for points on the shore that stick out in the surf, or spots on the beach that are irregular that sometimes hold fish. I have caught allot of fish over the first and second sand bars but most of the fish are over the third bar and come in through washouts or breaks in the third bar. If the wind is blowing, the surf is up, and the water is dirty, the only fish that swim around in that muck are whiting and reds. If you can’t catch mullet, use shrimp to catch whiting then use a big hunk of whiting to catch a big fat red. The Island is a beautiful place. It transforms around 18 miles down. You will have a blast and send us a report with pictures of all the fish you catch. L |
