Arrived at the launch point at first light Saturday morning. Wind was already making its presence felt and the tide was not as high as we would have liked. We had intended to fish the flats, but fished some deeper water for a while and released a number of dink trout. I finally set up on a point that I thought might be a good ambush point for some redfish and I was not disappointed. It was not long till I was hooked up with a heavy red that made one long run after another. I finally got him close enough to see that he was well over 30 inches. Unfortunately he was close enough to see me too and he wanted no part of it, with a big shake of his big head he turned and surged away, leaving me with a slack line. I paddled around for a bit and headed over to my friend Kevin who was throwing lures along the edge of a drop off and catching dink trout.
I was about 40 yards away when this huge fin broke the surface...I could not tell for sure whether it was a red or a big ugly. The size of that fin said 40 inches plus and he was headed straight towards Kevin. I called over a 'heads up' and he made a number of attempts at him but with no luck. That would have been fun to see with the light tackle he was using.

I moved down a ways and set up on another point and it was not long till I was hooked up with a good slot sized red. The fish in this area are strong and mean ..... long, strong, line stripping runs, and once again, when this fish came up and saw me, it gave a big head shake and rolled and I was left with just a hook. Redfish 2 - Longrod O. I made the score a little closer about ten minutes later when after a good battle I managed to string up a nice 25 inch red. Then I caught this...

The Oyster Toadfish may be ugly, but you can't help but be impressed with the patterns.

Twice again in the next 30 minutes, I hooked up with big, strong slot sized redfish only to be left with slack line when they managed to pull free right when I thought I had them played out. Final score - Redfish 4 - Longrod 1.

I can only think that I need to loosen up my drag just a little bit more.

Kevin left early. There were jellyfish in the water and he only had shorts on. Said he was stung four or five times, so he headed home. Jim made it back onto the flats and located some reds schooled up in a dead end cut. He managed to string up two of them before the rest stampeded past him into the open flats.
