|
|
| I'm looking for a reel for my 12' Allamerican Rodsmith. What would be a good entry level reel for surf casting? Is it better to have a levelwind or no levelwimd? What im looking for is something that is not too costly and ease of use and maintenance. I plan on going after some reds and small shark or whatever is willing to bite. Thanks in advance. |

| Diawa SL30 is a great reel for you rod. Penn's GS535 is not a bad choice either. No one really uses levelwind reels on 12-ft surf rods. |

| Both of these reels are over $130 i was actually looking for something a little less expensive then that. What about the Pflueger Contender reels or the Penn General Purpose 209M or 220 GTO. Has anybody tried any of these? What about the Shakespeare Tidewater 30L can these be modified or can the levelwind removed to get better casting distance? Thanks once angain.[/b] |

My first surf reel was a penn 309, ive got to where i can cast it pretty well but not nearly as well as my Diawa SHV. Its still a good reel for the price but I would think about saving up your money for a while and getting a SHV if that is possible.Or maybe even look into getting a Penn Squidder I think there aroud 70 bucks and ive heard you can cast them pretty far. Hope this helps. _________________ My Pictures - http://flickr.com/photos/jerrodmills/sets/ |

any of the GTI series should work. I use the 320 and 330 on boat rods and can cast them good. I used to have the 330 on a 10' eagle claw rod and cought some good fish with it. _________________ Shane |

| also check out the penn jigmaster and penn squider the jigmaster holds almost 600 yards of 25 lb and the squider holds well over 600 yards of 20 lb. both are easily magged and i've casted both of my squiders and jigmasters well over 200 paces( roughly 600 feet+- a few feet). think the jigmaster goes for around 60 bucks and the squider around 70. |
