I fished the ULM with a couple of guys from Minnesota yesterday. Fishng was slow but did manage to catch a few trout and a couple of flounder
on soft plastics. Did alot of moving around looking for any type of bait activity but not much going on early. After the sun came out, I guess it was around 10:00a we moved to some shallow flats in the Backyard looking for redfish. The wind had laid and the dang floating grass was thick
(thanks to the ducks). We were working the edge of a channel with soft plastics and shrimp and I noticed a what I thought was a piece of plastic
floating next to the channel edge. We started over using the trolling motor to pick it up and one of my clients said he saw a fin come to the surface
from the piece of plastic. My first thought was "yea right" but as we got closer I could wee the faint blottched coloring and I almost fell out of the boat. The plastic turned into a Triple Tail.....I couldn't belive it. I took one of the popping corks of of the clients line and told him to cast in front of the fish. He did and the fish ate the shrimp without any hesitation.
After a few minutes he landed a 23" long Triple Tail.
I guess it just goes to show you that sometimes we think we know then nature will show you just how much you don't know.
The surface water temp was in the 50's. According to everything I've read and been told these fish like water temps in the 70's to 80's.
Again I've learned to Never say Never.

I'll try to post some pic's soon.

Mike

always a time & a place to learn something even when it goes against what we have always believed to be true. as you said, even us oldsters can learn something. now remembering may be a different animal.

Way Cool!!!

All of my years fishing Texas bays including many years in Matagorda Bay out of POC, I have never caught a triple tail or seen one at the surface. But then again I have never targeted one either.

Don't think it was me Stan, we went in around 1:30. The guys ran out of beer. Very Happy .

I just thought I would share that experience with you guys. I caught some triple tails before but most of them durning the spring and summer. A few in CC Bay but most in the Gulf. What really suprised me was the water temp and the fact that the fish was on the surface where the temp was the coldest.
