I'm new to the area and have some questions. Most of you will snicker at a few of them, but I'm just transfered here and would really appreciate some advice. Thanks for bearing will me...

First, what are the PINS? I've read a lot about them on here, but am not sure. Are they just the dif. markers out on San Padre Island?

Is there good fishing in the canals on San Padre? I haven't done a lot of salwater fishing, but it seems like there should be a lot of fishing hanging out around all the private docks, especially the lighted ones. Does anyone fish 'em?

I've seen signs on NASCC for the lighted fishing docks. Are they any good to fish?

I have a kayak. Where is the best place to put in/paddle to find some fish. I don't actually have a place to live yet. Hopefully tommorrow... I'll most likely be somewhere on the island and would love some advice as to close fishing spots. I'm not asking for anyone's honey holes, but some general areas would be great.

Deepwater- Back in Pensacola, I knew a few guys with boats and loved getting out to do some bottom bouncing for grouper and snapper. Is there anyone here who might need an extra person to pitch in gas money??? Or, is there a charter company that everone recommends? I've heard there are some oil rigs pretty close in here (out of Pensacola it was 40+ mile run). Any info on that would be helpful.

Last but not least, are there any good public hunting places close? I've heard that almost all of the hunting is done on private leases/ ranches. I don't have the money or time to buy into a private club, so any advice on where i might do some small game and deer hunting on public land would be hugely appreciated.

Sorry for such a long post, but I'm new to the area and would love some advice. Thanks!

TO HELP YOU FIT IN IT IS ACTUALLY SOUTH PADRE
PINS -PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE- I THINK
THE QUALITY OF FISHING AT THE PIERS USUALLY DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THERE- THE MORE PEOPLE THE MORE FISH
YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THE BASE LAUCH YOUR YAK FROM THERE AND HEAD TO THE BOATHOLE,
SOMETIMES THE BEST THING TO DO WHEN YOU IN A NEW AREA IS GO TO ACADEMY OR WAL MART AND THEY HAVE A FISHING MAP DON'T RECALL THE NAME BUT IT MAPS OUT THE ENTIRE AREA YOU WILL WANT TO LOOK FOR UPPER LAGUNA MADRE CORPUS CHRISTI BAY SHAMROCK ETC.

WELCOME

jp3 - you asked a lot of Q's I'll try to answer just a few of them

re: kayaking. Seems like the a lot of people are fishing the lighthouse lake and brown & root flats areas on either side of 361 as well as other areas on backside of mustang and san jose. I'm not much of a bay kayaker, I spend all of my time on the gulf side w/ the kayak. If you're interested in meeting up, just holler at me.

re: nearshore/offshore fishing. There are lots of party boats out of port a that are fairly inexpensive but I prefer to go private. I have not taken the boat out since I bought my kayak but will keep you in mind if we start hitting nearshore rigs in the boat. Next week if the weather is right I might try to organize a group to paddle the yaks to some of the nearshore rigs. There are rigs very close (2.5- 3mi) to san jose, mustang and padre islands and they hold a variety of fish depending on time of year.

re: hunting. Lots of hunting is done via private land but there is plenty of public land here in texas. I've never hunted the public lands but would be game for doing so. I'm a bow hunting fanatic but I also do some wing shooting.

Good luck with everything, hope you find a place to stay.

i've been here a year and still learning. to clear up some questions and answers:
this is "north padre island". port a is "port aransas". main roads are
S P I D is south padre island drive or park road 22 on the island
jfk is the big bridge. bhp is bob hall pier. pins is padre island national shoreline. the sticks is north end of pins.
best suggestion is a repeat, get a map and read/learn it for the names and locations of good spots.
i don't hunt so i'm no help at all there.
good luck.

Go to Texas Parks and Wildlife web site and search for public hunting. There are a few State run places that draw for deer hunts. Some local farmers also work with the state to allow Dove hunts in places. You can do a search for different topics on this site for fishing answers. It will take a little time but their are lots of people here that will help you. They have me ..... Good luck and have fun....
