| This is kinda connected to my offshore question post. Has anyone tried the Butterfly jigs yet? If you have, do you think they might work from the beach or the jetties as well? Is it hype? If you google it you get lots of firm believers. It seems like it might be just the thing for Spanish on those days when they are picky and staying down next to the bottom. I'm not sure thy make one small enough? Thanks in advance for replies. |

As for the Butterfly jigs, Yes they work!! I have caught nearly everything the offshore fishing has to offer with these things.
The problem is the technique and depth you need to use these. Fishing from the beach will not give you enough room to work these as they are meant to be worked vertically. Fishing off the jetties might get you bit, but due to the moving tide and the fact that you have to bring the lure toward you (at an angle) will tend to either hang up on the rocks or not give you enough depth to get the jig working correctly. If you were in a boat at the jetties, no problem, but go with the smaller sizes (75 or 90 gram). |

No sense spending ridiculous monies for the butterfly jigs which i assume you're talking about the Shimano Jigs.
Checkout Bass-Pro's Offshore Anglers Free Style Jigs and Williamsons Benthos which cost much much less and just as effective as the butterflys.
There's other great low price jigs out in the market and you should be able
to find jigs under 2 oz for you to experiment with at the jetties/surf/piers.
I catch smacks & kmacks off of Caldwell and Bob Hall using light Mirror Lures and Megabait Live Jig, jigging straight drop under the pier. So I'm sure you should catch fish since the Asian Jigs have natural real angle diving fluttering action compared to the traditional old type jigs that are simply dead weight. Just be careful and not to jig too intense because of the depth at the piers but it should be deep enough to create action on the jig.
I have to try it just as soon I complete my stakeouts. Good luck.
going to Stealth mode........ NOW!!.................. |

I second fishheads opinion, the butterfly jigs do work offshore. And they will catch a variety of fish. Also, they would be hard to use nearshore. W.r.t offshore, I've seen snapper, triggers, dolphin and AJ caught with them and a friend swears he catches wahoo w/ them. The only thing I dont like about them is that they're expensive and labor intensive (ie you gotta site there and jig em up and down, just not my type of fishing, I'd rather be casting or bottom fishing).
If you are looking for something to catch spanish while standing on the jetty or in boat near jetty or from shore then I'd try some of the Slammer series by braid intl. They're a solid metal jig like the butterfly's but not as bizarrely shaped as the butterfly. Also much cheaper ($3-6). You can cast them out and let them sink and then reel in quickly, or you cast them out and immed start reeling quickly or you can cast them out and reel in slowly.
Good luck!
