Went down to the PINS Friday & Sat. Water was spectacular, clear. Made the flourcarbon leaders a must! Friday we got into large whiting, and a few trout. Chunked all kinds of lures, but had little luck till we found some finger mullet. (few) We imediately caught 3 16-17" trout. Could've had more but no finger mullet to be found. If I were headed down there, I'd make sure I brought an icechest and aerator along, and catch some prior to heading south. We went to the 24, set up camp. Had 2 shark runs, and that was it. (Skipjack for bait). Sat. morning, I started w/ bone spook Jr.'s and had a blast catching skipjack...Large ones, to the tune of 24" +. Not worth a darn to eat, but dang they're fun to catch. Could not have asked for a nicer weekend. Would have caught more fish, if only we could find the bait. Water was so clear that it made catching bait sized whiting very difficult. A sabiki rig would have come in handy for that.
SO...If you are planing on going here's what I suggest: (and a few things I'd have done different to put more fish in the box)
1. Get plenty of finger mullet. Trout & skippies were working behind the bar after the first gut...i.e. wade gut, bar, 1st gut Bar...cast behind this one...
2. light eggweight, and a 2-3ft leader of at least 30lb FLOUROCARBON. Use a 1/0 - 2/0 khale hook.
3. FISHBITEs for large whiting. I stopped and talked to a guy around the 12 that had one almost 18". We caught several in the 14" range. He as well as my group caught them off fishbites. I don't think color matters.
We had 3 different colors, and didn't really not a difference in action.
4. Stay mobile. Don't get bogged down in a spot that is not producing.
Didn't catch anything super big, other than the skippy, so sorry, no pix...but hope the tips will help. Had a great trip, and the weather couldn't have been any better. _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |

| Thanks for the report. It was good to meet you down there. We had much the same results with no shark runs. Water was definitely gorgeous. Almost too pretty.. You hit it right on the head about bait. Scarce.. |

Nice to meet you too smitty...Rabbit, was that you and trash heap down there around the 25? was around the 24 when you guys drove by in a pewter SUV. Yes, driving conditions were great down to the the 20. I didn't have to get in 4x4 until then, other than a few spots where people set up camp in the road . There was some weed comming in in the 10's but very little in the 20's. Water was crystal clear. if you can hit the low road during low tide, you'll save lots of gas. Didn't go past the 30...not that the conditions were worse, the other members of our party didn't see the need to go...Looks like we're in a typical August pattern, so conditions should hold out through the first cold front, unless we get a hurricane, then all bets are off... _________________ Vegetarian (n)...Old indian word for bad hunter |
