How close do Black Fin come in? Is there much of a chance of catching one at one of the closer rigs (5 miles out or so)?

I have fished the rigs regularly out to 7.5 miles and have never seen a tuna (doesn't mean they don't exist). You might have better luck behind a shrimp boat. The only thing close was last year when the water was crystal clear my friend hooked a bonito on very light tackle that tired out three of us before we got it in.

we caught them last summer at a floater 62 miles east of Port A in 1000' of water. I don't think you will find them in shallower water than that

A guy got a 70# Yellowfin about 7 miles out of Port O'Connor last year if I remember right, on a 16ft carolina skiff no less!

So, ANYTHING is possible...but your only chance at getting any tuna in close will be behind shrimpers.

Stranger things have happened...they caught a Dorado/Mahi on the flats in the LLM, so why not a BFin 3-4miles offshore???

Out of Matagorda we've hit them 20 miles out a few times , never seen them closer though ...

You can catch tuna in close by accident occasionally.

To find good concentrations of Blackfin Tuna you need to look at Shrimp Boats in 180'+ft deep. That's somewhere in the neighborhood of Hospital to Baker out of Port A.

Shawn Q..I saw a news story about a "yellowfin tuna" out of port ocoono a while back... are you sure it wasn't a jack crevelle that some reporter identified wrong?

As for the blackfins, I don't think there's much of a chance catching one 5 miles out. Stranger things have happened though. Sailfish have been caught off the standpipes 6 miles out, and several years ago, there were reports of a sailfish hanging out at the end of BHP. Whether this was truth, or the hallucination of some pier dweller, I can't say. I saw some photos of a sailfish swimming around a marina in Florida. For a general rule though, your best bet for blackfin is to hit shrimpers in 300+ feet of water, or the floaters which are 60-130 miles out.

I've caught some blackfin around the shrimpboats in less that 200 feet of water... just depends on currents, water temp, and whether or not they're under the shrimpers.

If I aint mistaken I believe a sailfish was caught off the Port A jetties a long time ago . I also noticed with Blackfin , the few times i've seen them close (20 miles) it was on the miserable hot calm offshore days we all know about ...
