After weeks of wandering lonely shorelines with barely a redfish visible, I finally had success Saturday while storms rolled through. Not sure if I just got lucky or if I was seeing a pattern, I returned Tuesday morning and confirmed that this is a pattern that needs to be exploited while it holds. I paddled across the bay before daylight and by the time I got to the target lake it was light enough to see wakes. What I found was at least eight groups of reds pushing across open water, pursuing those baby shad that are everywhere right now. Birds were hovering over several of the schools, but with winds below 10mph I didn't need much help locating the fish. There were thousands of reds and it seemed that everywhere I looked there were several chasing bait. Water across the giant lake was just 5-12" deep, and when the fish were moving they left nice wakes. I ran over hundreds of resting reds that would leave mud clouds as they ran away, but the hunting fish were my targets and they seemed to be everywhere. I could pull fish out of all the closest hunting groups and then that area would get quiet, so I would push a hundred yards farther in and find new groups still pushing. I caught my first red and immediately put him in the floorboard to grab a second rod. I hooked a second fish from the next school that was coming right to the kayak, and just like that I was only one fish short of a limit. The next fish looked great as it left a large wake, but as it made its first run I realized this one was over the slot. Over the next 90 minutes I caught a dozen solid reds. I had broken up all the close schools, but there were several still working at the top of the lake. I decided that instead of more redfish, I would head back to the bay to search for trout among the oysters. I did manage to get the attention of four trout, but the ones I found were all just under the slot, so I released them and headed home to clean up before an afternoon of meetings at work.
I'm glad to have finally figured out where all the redfish went, because they sure aren't cruising grass shorelines in the usual fashion. It's a longer paddle to find them right now, but I don't mind paddling a few more miles if there are fish waiting at the other end.

| Wednesday was the best window for BTB but there were meetings at work that kept me off the water. How did you do? |

I was wondering. I heard the surf was down. Oh well, there should be chances soon. |
