Went to the RGV for my semi-annual Mexico dental/meds/contact lens trip. Fished three days, took my 14 foot tin skiff. Fished South Bay, before Elon's sewer/rocket discharge kills it. Launched at one of the 2 free public ramps on SPI(a well-kept secret), motored to SB. Using live shrimp, caught 10 short Reds, then, one 27" hog. Let him go. Caught 4 short Trout, then, one 17" keeper. Caught one Drum. one Mangrove, one Whiting. I was fishing two rods, and I baited a hook with a shrimp, chunked it out, laid it in the cockpit of my skiff, tended to my spinning rod, and BAM! my best bait caster and Shimano reel zoomed over the gunnel and gone in three seconds! It's WAR, and sometimes the other team wins.
Next day, launched at the TX 48 bridge at Zapata ramp. Current started humming under the bridge, and I caught my obligatory Hardheads, donated some tackle to Oyster Gods. Finally, caught two Snook, both 19", but they were my 2nd & 3rd Snook of my life. Great Day!
Last day, I fished with my Harlingen friend at Port Mansfield, in his Chittum Challenger. We wade-fished, which was a new scenario for me. First flats we hit I caught two fish: both Hardheads! Next spot was some reef drains, and I caught a few slot Trout. We moved to another flat, and caught a lot of Trout, and some very nice, but out-of-season Flounder. Another Great Day!
Ain't it a great day to be alive! I just passed 80, and I'm glad to be alive.
Best to y'all, TexasJim
