…and all across the flats I expected silence. What I got was several mud boats exploring every back lake for potential hunt locations. Every inch of shorelines got burned at least once through the afternoon, so conditions for fishing were tough. Nervous fish didn’t get up to eat much, but I kept looking, determined that despite the challenges there would be a fish or two willing to bite. In one connecting channel I spotted a back out of the water from 300 yards. I continued in that direction hoping a boat wouldn’t suddenly appear and take away the only chance I had seen. Thankfully it stayed quiet for long enough to get to the location. When I spotted the fish it was swimming towards me in four inches of water. I waited for it to get within 20 feet before gently laying the bait just beyond its path. A slow retrieve was all that was needed, and the fish thumped the bait hard. It barely took any drag, and I guessed it might be a lower slot fish, but when I scooped it into the net, the fish suddenly realized the danger and started really fighting. But it was too late. After several attempts I got a hand on the gills of the fish for a photo, and at 27.5” it was put right into the box. Once in, the fish spent the next 15 minutes playing the bass drum from within the kayak. It was okay because within five minutes my buddies in the mud boat came roaring through on their way to explore the last few options I had available. I got to re-live my old visits to NASCAR races as the boat, running straight pipes and making more noise than a Space-X rocket went by. I did my best to find another fish that wasn’t scared witless, to no avail. By sunset I had paddled 10.5 miles and explored a lot of water, but at least I was able to find one relaxed fish.
