Saturday we had that terrible clear blue sky and high pressure that lots of people seem to enjoy, but that makes the fish and game sleepy. I fished and paddled over ten miles and came home with nothing to show for it. I shared the water with lots of folks looking for fish but saw none caught. So I watched the weather and hoped for a window this week. This morning I found one.

When I left the house at 5:00 the pressure was much more moderate, and a few puffy clouds hung in the sky to reassure me that we were going to find active fish. The moon made navigating the maze in the back of the Nueces easy, and by daylight I was three and a half miles from the truck and excited to start the day. I laid out the fly rod, but also had the spinning rod ready. Spooky fish were going to get caught one way or another, lol. As it turned out, the winds were lower than forecast, and it was super quiet. I could hear teal flying past 100 yards away, and a tractor off towards Odem was mowing somewhere beyond view. It was STILL.

I did manage to find fish moving along shorelines, but they weren't aggressive or careless. They were feeding along slowly making very few wakes visible from a distance. I picked up a few fish and then began to come across birds hopping shorelines. I spent the morning pitching baits to any fish that would allow it, and by the time I headed back I had caught eight nice reds. Some were beautiful dark orange pumpkins, but several were the usual faded orange too. All the fish were caught on the Z-man Diezel minnow. I tried the fly on a couple of fish but they weren't wanting to play that game. I'm not that picky and will toss whatever lure the fish want to eat, so I kept using the spinner. By the time I got back to the truck the wind had come up and the bay was beginning to build up waves. Now it's back to the office to catch up on emails and meetings.

I looked at the pics before reading the text. I saw the fly rod in your lap and thought ....Paddletails on a fly rod! That must be a Prof. Saltism.
