Redoing my center guide bunks tomorrow and wondered whether I need carpet or not.
I've seen both down here and have always had carpet, but it really just holds dirt, salt and water and caused my old ones to rot faster down here.

Opinions?

Thanks in advance!

I too have read and seen both, but when I bought a new trailer I only had the choice of carpet, thus have not experienced an alternative. I would think using carpet would be the cheapest route unless one just used the existing timber rails with no covering. Many have used a plastic of some makeup, but I can't help but wonder how the sand, etc. effects the hull with the timber, plastic, or carpet? In other words is one more destructive to the hull then another? Otherwise, longevity is another consideration one can probably only learn through practice. Using carpet has a greater contribution to corrosion on ones trailer, due to the retention and slow release of the saltwater vs. timber or plastic. Since I've not compared the cost of each I have no comment there, except nothing is cheap these days. Laughing Good luck with your choice and let us know how it works out.

Never use carpet on trailer bunks if you have an aluminum boat and dunk the trailer in salt water. A neighbor had to have a new bottom put on his custom aluminum skiff, because the salt in the carpet ate four slots through the bottom.

I have seen trailers here on the coast with plastic runners over the wooden bunks that looked like the Trex stuff they make decks with. Never investigated it. I don't think the plastic alone would be stiff enough. My aluminum skiff trailer has grey PVC conduit for the runners, but it only weighs about 400 pounds.

Don't go down the road with [ SLICK STICKS ] they will scare up the hull if ant blemishes.

I have carpet and now and then i will skirt DAWN soap on the carpet when its wet and aging before i load up. Works for me.

Thanks

I ended up only doing the rotten, broken bunk board and leaf springs yesterday.
Only carpeted the top and 2/3 of the sides of the new bunk board.
Have the lumber for the other one, just didn't have enough galvanized screws to mount to the second bunk board. The existings, less than a year old, were already too trashed to use.

FYI - Greg at Superior Trailer was an awesome help getting the right spring parts for me for a little over $200.00

Thanks all for all the discussion and help making a decision on how to proceed!

I got the lumber at Lowes and the brackets etc on Amazon.
The carpet I got at Walmart on closeout.
Superior supplied the leaf springs and associated h/w.
