Went out to get the newspaper this morning and made a trip out to my dock. I have an ultra light rod setup with a tandem rig with two 1-in paddle tail lures. Made one cast and as I'm bringing it to the light it gets hit by a trout that was about 18 to 20 in. While I'm fighting it I see a second one of equal size come by and grabs the other lure. I'm fighting them but my ultra light what is no match for them and they wound up finally snapping my line. Got quite an adrenaline rush. Didn't need my coffee this morning to wake me up.
This is what I've been using and catching nice trout on the lights. All hooks that I use when I'm fishing off my dock I break the wire up off of for easy removal. Hopefully these guys won't be playing tug of war for a long time and that hook will fall out.

Have also been having a lot of good luck on trout using my fly rod and a chartreuse and white clouser

Speaking of lights on canals, I had purchased some green LED spotlights years ago, that I put in some old stage lights pointed down from about 8 ft above the water. These worked "OK", but not great. One of the bulbs went out. so I replaced with a Westinghouse bulb. Holy crap, these bulbs are great! All kinds of bait, crabs, needle fish, perch.

Just ordered another from Ace Hardware for $13.99 ($28.46 at Amazon):
