Possibility of moving to the Coastal Bend this summer. Only 1 kid left at home. We have all the toys......boat, kayaks etc.
How many of you live on the water?
Pros and cons please. _________________ The entertainment is cheap, . . . It's the price of admission that gets you. |

I live on the canal. Love it. Don't have to trailer the boat to go put it in and fish. When I used to live off of the water when I put the boat in it would have to be an all-day trip to make it worthwhile. Now takes me two minutes to get where I want to fish. If the weather changes or if the water is bad or whatever the case I just head back in go out another time. Plus with kayaks etc etc when the grandkids or great grandkids come over there's all kinds of fun things for them to do. Also I catch crabs and fish right off my dock. Also I have an underwater light that makes it like one big giant salt water aquarium.
As far as cons, I'm sure there might be some but I don't have any. |

I will add a couple thoughts as a property owner on the water. We have a place on a canal but it is not our primary residence.
We love it, lots of pros. That being said, the environment is tough on things. Humidity, heat, wind and salt take their toll on house, paint, AC, items in the garage, etc. But we knew that going in... |

I think a lot of those problems are typical of Corpus Christi in general and not just living on the water |

Yeah my many years on the Island i liked living on the canal, like Zia says it is a breeze keeping the boat in the backyard. Miss my mornings before day break with coffee checking out what was above the green light my neighbor had.
Thats a whole different topic fishing at midnight above green light.
Only a few times when we had a fish kill from red tide. That sucked for a few weeks with the smell of the dead fish.
Again Zia is right about the corrosion aspect. Don't matter if your on the water or close to it. You will have corrosion . Even stainless steal.
Man if you have the opportunity to live on a canal go for it. You will never have a problem also on the re-sale. |

Thanks for the responses.
My grandparents lived in Port A and later Aransas Pass when they needed to be closer to medical care. We visited SO often i feel like i practically grew up down there in the 80's
Brought my kids down 4 or 5 times a year as they grew up. Still have one in the house but im getting tired....just want to wake up and smell the salt, hear the seagulls and feel the sun and wind.
Another thought..
Rising sea levels....... Real issue or not ? _________________ The entertainment is cheap, . . . It's the price of admission that gets you. |

"Rising sea levels....... Real issue or not ?" Interesting you should ask that question, because I'm one of Coach Zia's neighbors on his canal and due to my bulkhead being compromised I am having to consider encapsulating it with a new material. The result is the new one has to be engineered to get permits and the engineer wants my bulkhead level to rise 3.5' over my existing bulkhead cap. Mind you, water has never risen above my current bulkhead cap (that I know of) and my lawn is level with my neighbor's lawn and Zia's. Obviously, I'm objecting to their plan, but at this time it is not a decided matter. That being said, it's obvious to me someone believes the levels are going to be higher. I'm suspect they voted for our current administration. |

| You should call Ronnie Voss who owns Voss Engineering on Greenwood in Corpus outside of Saratoga. |

We own a place in port isabel on the fingers my retirement plan. Weve spent alot in gettin up where we want it and different projects. As well as had bulkhead redone to be safe than sorry approach. As was stated higher n bigger than last according to Eng specs. Im a mech eng so was easy for me to get into. We go down when we can other than that VRBO pays bills. Since the mask mandate was lifted its been booked every week. Lots of pros and cons. Do whats best for you _________________ Long time avid fisherman rod builder. |
