Does anyone have any experience with this model? With young ones at home I guess its time to have a more reliable way of communicating with the old lady. For $200 and free 2 day shipping I figured id give it a shot. So if no one has anything to say about it check back next week for my full report about it Cool

As a guy who routinely spends time off the grid, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

I had the original SPOT. The cost of the device is rather cheap, it will need a data plan though and those can get pricey. I swapped it for an ACR resQlink a few years ago. They cannot send messages but it works without a subscription.

Just a note, the SPOT 3 is on clearance at Cabelas, under a hundred bucks and does everything you are asking.

Don't want to to tell you your business, but I had one and returned it as it had a defective seal when it arrived. Anyways, I ended up with a Garmin Explorer+ thing. $26.99 a month gets you 40 messages per month. But I think that thing was almost 300 dollars. If it wasn't for it though, I told Kathy I wouldn't go down the sand anymore once she was past 4 months with each pregnancy.

It was a real shameful thing to have bought otherwise, at least for me. But I really do believe if Louis or Ralph would have had that technology they would have used it. I really do. It does get satellite marine weather reports and it has SOS capability for if a dumb idiot is too far offshore in the Zodiac and that thing goes down. Your kids and mine need their dad to return in one piece. Best of luck.

TT, I vividly remember one of your posts mentioned buying a Sat messenger. It was the reason I wanted to get one. Without it, you may have missed the birth of your kid so I figured I needed to get one too. But after searching through posts I couldnt seem to find the original thread about which one you bought so I did a little research of my own. I really liked all the features of the Garmin but I ended up going with the spot just because the plans were a little cheaper than the Garmin and I liked the keyboard of the spot. All in all, the Spot X did everything I needed it to. I was able to send and receive messages with no problem. Funny enough though, we were able climb the first set of dunes and get good enough cell signal to make a call lol. I broke down once and had to make a 1/2 mile trek to get signal.

squidder, you were able to text and receive texts from your cell by climbing a high dune - is that what you said? And when you talked about sending messages via the device you bought, were those text messages via cell phone number ?

Years ago, i was able to get at least text messages transmitted and received from the top of high sand dunes. A fellow i tried to help 2-3 years ago - we were at 33, he needed a tow, he had run into a washed in tree during the night and was hungup in it - he had some friends he could call to help them. I told him to hike up the dunes beside us and call - he did , he got through to his friends who showed up with strong enough vehicles to pull him off, i still had the subie then, obviously that it couldnt do that job.

To be able to get texts while on the sand for emergencies would have been good back when i had kids, though they were always with me down there, you guys who work down here, different story. now , I am at the WGASWTOMFI age - so i would pass on it.

Hey Donnie! Ive never tried sending texts while high in the dunes. I have been able to make phone calls though. The device I bought delivers texts messages through a phone number just like any cell phone. With each text it also sends out your exact location. It takes roughly 10-15 min each way for messages. Its a nice addition with young kids at home
