To anyone who has refurbished an old Harnell rod - I just won an auction on Ebay, but have not received, a Harnell 680, two piece, 11 foot spinning rod. I want to redo it in the classic Harnell look but I am not sure what the gold is under the spiral part of the wrap. Is it simply paint? The only other thing for now that I am concerned with is the ferrule and how to remove it if it needs to be replaced. Any thoughts?

yellow and red thread wraps, note for the guides, the red is a layer over yellow
gold is mylar foil
You can buy it as sheet film, tape, or fly tying tinsel.

might get other ideas searching mylar on rodbuilding forums
