I hit the beach before dawn and prepped the kayak. Once it was light enough to see the breakers I headed out to the rigs near Mayan Princess. Fish were around but the kings and cobia refused to play along. Spanish macks, skipjacks and snapper were plentiful and hungry, but I missed the big fish. I fished around each rig and then hopped farther out to the two rigs at 7 and 8 miles, but still no big fish. I was 3 miles from shore and heading in when I heard a shrimper pulling somewhere behind me. He was barely moving as his nets were out, so I headed two miles farther out to intercept him and catch the fish I had been missing all morning. I paddled in over his nets with baits deployed but got no response. Then I slowed and let the baits drop behind the nets ...but still no action. A boat nearby said they had caught five sharks but nothing else, so I headed back for the beach. Along the way I came upon a big sleeping loggerhead. I was within about 10 feet before he woke up and decided to head for the bottom - sorry for waking you buddy. Running the surf was a blast since all the gear was stowed inside the hull. According to the gps I maintained 10-11 mph surfing in from the 3rd bar. Very Happy

A day on the water is better than a day at home, even when the big fish are playing hard to get - and 17+ miles will keep the muscles in shape for next time!

You didn't need a dose of Mercury from the big fish. A mess of Smacks and a snapper or two would have been sufficient for me. I do know however that getting ones line strongly tugged is great. I fish here in Arkansas own Bull Shoals and Norfork reservoires. Both have stocked Striped Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass. It's a hoot to catch one up over 20 lbs. Takes the set our of your lines.

Thanks for the report Glenn. Sound like fun even though you didn't get the big ones

Shocked 2020 continues to be a year of shocks and surprises!!! Pandemics, riots, defunding the popo, all the craziness going on and now the Prof. Doesn't catch a kingfish!!!! What are the chances of that?

Weird how that happens sometimes. We went out during snapper season and caught our limits and a bunch of mangroves. I wanted a king or two to smoke and we couldn't buy one! Trolled and soaked bait and never came close to a king. Strange when you usually can't keep them off.

I have faith you'll get your king mojo back and I'm looking forward to the next report!

I don't need kingfish for food so much, but they're certainly fun to play with. Using a kayak limits my ability to reach tuna and wahoo, so I'll take what I can get.

Prof. Salt,
your report here is a spot on account of Saturday 12th.
Trolled the reef and various rigs Saturday to no avail.
No Kings..etc. Did see a ton of small triple tail along with bait and birds working the big rig north side.(Mayan)
Current was so strong jig fishing was almost impossible.
Conditions offshore were well lets says slightly different than forecasted.
Next time I suppose.
