Went out this morning to see if I can find some fish. I heard there was a school of reds around some of the spoil islands by Pita. Wind was kind of out of the Southwest so my drift was a little bit different than planned. I was drifting towards one of the spoil islands and was about 50 yards from it when I look out the corner of my eye and I see a boat coming from my left. I thought to myself this guy's not going to come in between me and the island. Sure enough he did. I stood up stuck my arms out like what the heck. Comes over and says what's your problem. I said you just cut off my drift. He said well I thought I was going around you but too damn bad. When I saw him stop a few hundred yards behind me and set up a drift I thought about running in front of him but I thought we don't need two jerks on a water. Anyway I left there went to a bunch of other areas and picked up 1 16 in trout. On my way back in I went back to that same island and picked up a nice red. Vacuum sealed the red for a friend of my son's who's coming in from New Mexico and I'm going to trade some green chilies for some fish. I threw the trout on the smoker along with a half a brisket.

Gotta love the barter system! We routinely trade a Philipino friend fish for lumpia or pancet. So good!
Sorry to hear you also got cut off. At least you kept your cool about it! Thanks for sharing! _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Interesting you cooked the trout with the skeletal bones in. Did you scale and de-fin it also? Cooking fish with the primary bones in it results in a better flavor, in my experience. Sorry about the cut-offs, just another reason not to be armed on the water!
This has been many years ago, but my worst case of being cut-off happened over at Port A when a guide and his four male customers cut my wife and I off about 150-200' in front of our drift and anchored up near a redfish hole! I just continued to drift within about a boat length of them, and over the redfish hole, especially since they had not had time to grab a rig to cast. Needless to say the guide was totally po'ed. In our brief verbal exchange he said he thought we were anchored up! I'm sure things were a little more civil, due to my wife being present. He immediately cranked up and left. |

Two weeks ago, at dawn on a Sunday morning, a guide cut me off along KR Shoreline. Set up for a drift with a SE wind, and here he comes in front of me. Nobody else along the whole shoreline that morning. I cast and landed it within 3 ft of his boat. So....not outsiders. Not just idiot fisher-folks... _________________ "In your guts you know he's nuts" |

With the trout I just deheaded it and gutted it put some garlic salt on the inside along with some herbs and threw it on the smoker. Was very, very tasty and moist.
One of the worst experiences I had with somebody cutting me off was years ago. I was anchored up at the humble channel just before it goes into the boat hole. Myself and a friend were fishing the East drop off. From my left I see a guide coming with two customers and he's trolling working that drop off. I can't remember his name these days but he had his name on the side of the boat and I've seen them at Bluff landing a number of times. I figured no problem, when he gets fairly close to me he'll use his trolling motor go around me and then proceed on his way. Wrong! He kept going right down the drop off right in front of me and he looked at me and said get yourself a trolling motor and start fishing like the big boys. That pissed me off. And I wasn't as nice as I was yesterday. I pulled up anchor and buzzed that drop off a couple times before leaving and going to another spot on the other side of the bridge. |

Zia, is it possible the State of Texas has sold some of these guides exclusive rights to some of our favorite fishing spots? |

Zia, If you don't mind I am going to steal your grilled fish method and try it.
Thank you for sharing it.
Most guides are really nice guys.
But there are one or two that are just plain rude.
Perhaps they become like that from dealing with out of town A holes every day demanding to catch fish.
I certainly do not have the temperament and social skills to be a guide.
When disrespected on the water the better man will just let it go and move on with his fishing.
Let the A hole be what he is and feel sorry for him and the family that must tolerate his behavior. _________________ Willee 361-563-1303 |

Not so much grilled or smoked. If you do it let me know how it turns out for you. |
