I had the go ahead from the wife to take a fishing day. So a day I took. Was on the boat for 10 hours fishing, checking out new spots, just loving the outdoors (despite 2 drifts being cut off by boaters that were literally within casting distance, and 2 spots being potlicked as I circled around for a second or 3rd drift) . Caught a limit of trout, released a 24.5 incher (see pic), lost 2 flounder at the boat Evil or Very Mad , and had a few unknown fish make some drag peeling runs before the hook pulled.

By the way if anyone has some boatside flounder landing techniques I am all ears....

Came home cooked up some fresh trout and had a wonderful time. We fished drop offs and sand pockets mostly. Also tight up against spoil islands. By tight I mean we casted on to dry island a few times and caught fish on the retrieve. The lure of choice was, my favorite, Kwiggler Mansfield Margarita in both ball tail and willow tail (the new garlic scented is very potent smelling and the fish loved it). I rigged it on a 1/16th ounce rattler jighead. The floating grass was hellacious so if you're heading out, just know what to expect. Get out and get ya some!

Nice and happy birthday. I know what you mean by being cut off. I was drifting up towards an island and I was about 50 yards from where I am wanted to be in here comes a boater right between me and the island. And then he decides to go back behind me anyway. Go figure.

Glad you had a good birthday and caught some fish

The exact same thing happened to me. I was about 50 yards from an island and a super shallow flat. Had hundreds of yards behind me. This dude ran in front of me nearly sticking his boat, throwing mud and stuff all over. With that spot blown out I just moved along. No sense in letting some jerk ruin an otherwise good day.

Thanks for the birthday wishes yall!

With the flounder it's probably more about the hookset than what's happening boatside. Flounder have a bony mouth so lots of times your hook is in the mouth but not buried, so if you are targeting them it is helpful to tighten up your drag a bit and cross their eyes with a big Bill Dance hookset. A new sharp jighead and stiffer rod can also help.

I'm not know for having a weak hook set lol (or loose drag for that matter). I guess i haven't been specifically targeting them but I have been seeing a sort of pattern so I might start making an effort to target them and give your advice a shot. Thanks, I will take all the flounder help i can get!

I was into probably a 24-inch flounder for 10 minutes, slowly creeping from Little Cut to Aransas Bay. I made 4 or 5 solid hook sets. First time I lifted the fish, it spit.

Beautiful 24.5"er, and good for you that you released her. On the flounder at the boat, my rule is: do not let them get their heads out of the water. Once their head is out of the water all they have to do is flap their tail and it allows them to throw the hook. At least that's my experience. Just try to net them below the surface, if possible. Also, I never try to grab a flounder with my hand, primarily due to their sharp teeth and the hook. If they get the chance to get their head out of the water and your trying to grip them with your hand, the chance of getting a hook or sharp teeth in your hand is much greater. BTW, happy birthday to another Virgo! Very Happy

I was thinking that about the net as well. I only had my short wading net on the boat thinking it was long enough, but looks like I may need to get a longer handled net. I did make the mistake of trying to lift one into the boat and that didn't work for me either.

They do have so gnarly teeth!

Happy Birthday and nice fish. Heck I don't even know how to handle fish in the bay, I am so used to dragging them up on the sand!

NIce report and happy bday man! Yeah the flounder thing is mostly getting them to eat the bait good before setting the heck out of the hook. Also when bringing them in keep your rod low and kind of swing them to you. Once the Line gets vertical it gives them leverage to shake their head real hard and pop it out.
