>> Cross said he is applying for $25
million in FEMA funds to mitigate
damage from Hurricane Hanna and
the money will be used to repair the
pier, and replace the former T-shapedfeature at the end of the pier with
another structure, possibly octagon
shaped. The money would also be
used to build a concrete parking lot at
Bob Hall Pier to replace the asphalt
lot that was destroyed and to make
improvements to the lot at Horace
Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas.
Pending the findings of the
inspection Bob Hall Pier and Mikel
Mays remain closed. << I grew up when there were multiple Ts on BHP and i thought that was great for people wanting to fish different places in the surf - probably way too expensive today, but this octagon shaped end - sounds interesting. I could see a place in the center of that where there would be benches (this is not mentioned but just seems like a good thing for tourists) where people could sit and watch the sharkers do their thing out there. Plus the octagon end would/should produce more fishing elbow room . Like the report in the Island magazine says, the results of the study of what the damages actually are is supposed to be released this week.

Those were great days - and those other Ts spread the fishermen out more.

I've long since ran out of fingers and toes to count the number of times that asphalt parking lot has been destroyed by a storm in the Gulf (and most of them don't even need to come close to here!! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ).

I know it has almost no chance of happening, but if they were to rebuild the pier with multiple T's, wouldn't it be logical to get a group of the best fishermen who fish the pier and/or the surf and put the T's where they would do the most good?? I noticed the 1st T in the picture allowed many more fishermen to fish the 1st and second gut. I mentioned in another post on how the city/county might dispose of all concrete.brick/other non-polluting waste in strategic locations around the pier to act as a shallow reef. They have to put the concrete somewhere. Shore and pier anglers should have some access to reefs too.

I counted 81 cars parked on the beach in the photo. They must have been doing something right.

Here in Arkansas, local fisherman's groups, the Arkansas Game and Fish, and the Army Corps of engineers have established almost 500 fish attractors of between 100 to 500 cedar and hardwood trees in 20-30 feet deep water in Bull Shoals Reservoir alone. Most all of these fish attractors are renewed every 7-10 years.

While it would work great to consult with local fisherman, and while this design, improved and modernized of course might be attractive to them, it is also something to keep in mind that what is under the water, just like what is on the beach is constantly shifting - particularly during storms. So if you place T-Head #1 where Gut 2 is now, there may not necessarily be a gut there in a year or two - it might be dead on top of a sandbar.

The octagonal design is based on several piers on the east coast (especially Florida) and it seems to work well with fishermen and storms both. I think what they need to focus on most is storm durability, which means modern design elements and even additions to support the general structure, but also consider building it higher off the water (again, look at some Florida piers...almost twice as high off the water as BHP & HCP).

If thou whom shall not be named is anywhere near correct in estimating a $1.5 "fix" vs. a $2 rebuild, with a time difference of the two only being an extra 6 months - I'd say rebuild. But, I want real estimates from trustworthy sources, not from the people use any slight excuse to close our beaches off again and again.

I just think that the pier should be built with the most fishermen in mind, not designed for the few who fish the T-Head at the piers end for shark and King Mackeral.

I slept in a Holiday In Express last night, so I am smarter than a Marine Engineer. A spiral shaped pier is what we need, like a double helix DNA. Future modifications could be made like gene splicing.

Agreed 100%. If you look at the plans for the new Cole Park pier, they clearly didn't have fishermen in mind. Let's not let that happen to BHP.

Yep, sounds about right. Laughing

Why would someone build a pier that wasn't for fishing - unless like Santa Monica, CA they plan to put an amusement park on it.

How long can the city go on replacing damaged Bob Hall pier after every hurricane season?

Wasn't the last one built with concrete slabs that were removable to minimize storm damage?
Why were they not removed prior to the storm?
I haven't heard anyone talking about that!

I think it is time to design and build a pier that can withstand the wind and waves.
Perhaps a jetty type structure and then build the pier on that foundation.

Tunnelvision. Not always one thang. Birdwatchers? Tourists that don't fish?

Look at Mikel Mays. Over $400,000 appraised value (2020 Nueces CAD) for a location that the federal (USFWS) dollars paid for the public to have a nature "observation deck". Now that $750,000 will be spent on an observation deck for Bob Hall Pier in Port A (after courts got involved)

Why should Mikel Mays get a monopoly? Why not more restaurants?

Outside the box? How about an elevated central row of restaurants and a WIDE pier underneath on the lower deck, where each side would have sunny open decks, and the central part would provide shade under the restaurants?

How did the Balinese survive all those years?
