|
|
An orange Pelican kayak was found in Aransas Channel near Aransas pass this morning, with fishing gear aboard. TPWD is asking if anyone knows of an overdue yakker, or if anyone is missing a kayak. Hopefully, it just came loose from someone's canal-front dock.
I got the heads-up from my nephew in D/FW, but the alert was on the Game Warden site, with a pic of the yak.

| Maybe this post should be on the Kayak Forum? |

The Game Warden site had a post that they had found the owner of the kayak, but it wasn't really very confident-sounding..It wasn't from the Game Wardens.
Maybe this should have been in the kayak section, but there's very little traffic there.

Maybe I should have said, also? I just thought a kayaker might know something about the kayak or who owned it. My bad. |

another good reason to have your hull registered with an MMSI - and the certificate number permanently marked in your boat.
You, your boat, and whatever contact information you registered is in the Coast Guard database.
MMSI registration is free - you don't need VHF/GPS/DSC to obtain one, but you do need a cell phone.

Noon News in CC said the owner came forward to claim his yak, and that we all need to put contact info on our kayaks. Right! TexasJim _________________ TexasJim

| Owner piped up on one of the other fishing boards while the search was going on and stated that he had not as of yet called anyone. Stated his kayak was stolen while he was fishing the night before. The USCG stopped by our spot at 3 in the afternoon (Light House lakes) with pics on the kayak asking if we had seen anyone while the guy was on FB telling us all about it. Maybe he thought he was going to get in trouble? |

I guess MMSI stands for Mighty Mouse Security Information? I looked in the thread on secret codes and found nothing.
I thought I would try to answer my own question, so for anyone else not readily familiar with MMSI here is a site you can visit:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_Mobile_Service_Identity |

| Thanks for elaborating on the subject of MMSI Bulldog. I'm sure it will be helpful to others, as well as myself. I've read about MMSI relative to DSC radios, but I did not extend it to being helpful in identifying boats the radio was related to. If everyone would get on board maybe it will assist in preventing thief, especially if the number was boldly stated somewhere on the exterior of a kayak. |

The thing is, you only need a cell phone to request an MMSI registration.
All it costs the FCC is 150 b of computer storage.
But it puts you and your hull into a database USCG can access, and I'm sure they're friendly with TPWD, as well.
If you ever add the DSC radio, you will need to program your MMSI number into the radio and forever link the hull and radio - DSC is what requires you to have an MMSI per FCC.
E.g., I have one linked to my Tarpon, and another linked to my dad's McKee.
But even if you want to change the radio to a different boat permanently, all the radio manufacturers will show you how to reset it to go.
If you sell the boat, the MMSI transfers to the new owner. |

While I totally agree with registration, it's going to lead to government bloat. Before long, kayaks will have to have a valid and visible registration number on the bow, and will be subject to the same fines/penalties of state and fed laws. And have to be inspected every year. Do y'all really want that???
They are "voluntarily" driving you towards tracking and registration. Just like they tried to do with bicycles. But why can by bicyclists be pedestrians at one point, vehicles at another, and completely ignore traffic laws? THIS is why. THEY fought it.
Believe me or not, before I moved to Corpus, I lived near the Austin area and knew how bicycle-centric they were. You could make a left turn into a driveway and if there was bicycle crossing it, it had the right of way. Corpus is nowhere near that bicycle-centric, but I'm just giving you an example of what could easily happen on our waters.
Kayaks are the bicycles of the water. But do we want them to go through the same registration process of a motored boat? NO! Do we want them to become 'pedestrians' on water? NO. I think we have a good balance where we are now. Don't let the Fed let you believe that registration is optional and safe. That's just how they get you before it becomes mandatory. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

no bloat, 150 b on FCC computer, accessible by USCG and whomever they want to share.
The mechanism has been there a long time, beginning with regulatory paper in 1932, replaced by the simple computer space in recent years.
It's nice they added paddlecraft to the free registration, and no conspiracy involved.
Voluntary registration (mandatory with DSC device) benefits you more than the Fed - excepting the USCG and random abandoned boat incidents.
Bicycles? Many, including my buddy, are running full-time video capture front and rear (built into bike lights), so smile, you're on candid camera.
Overnight in a hospital is $50,000, not counting atty fees. (insurance cos. get a different rate - $12,000)
Then there's concealed carry, which applies to all "pedestrians" |
