Went over to Taos to play some pickleball and on the way back I stopped at the Rio Grande. Parts of the river were unfishable because it was frozen. Started throwing spinnerbaits with no luck. I figured that with the cold water they didn't want to work hard for dinner. Switched to power bait and had it roll along the bottom and pulled 5 rainbows out of the river. Let the all go to hide back under the ice.

bear baby is called

As usual some more awesome pictures!

Does the trout in the third picture have a nawed off tail or is it just the picture angle?

at first when I looked at it I thought it was just the angle of the picture but the more I looked at it looks like it might have gotten bitten by something.

Mary and I took a hike yesterday over to the Rio Grande. This trail is about 600 feet above the Rio Pueblo which is a tributary of the Rio Grande. Going down was a lot easier than coming back up.

Beautiful pictures as always. And good to see the wife in one.... If you like the rio grande, try santa elena canyon in big bend. swift water with good pockets hidden. and 1500 foot walls...gives the grand canyon a ride for its money. Some of the best fly fishing in Texas, especially this time of year. just have to deal with the border a bit...

Woke up this morning and looked out my bedroom window and was greeted by this beautiful sunrise.

Those stocker rainbows get a little beat beaten up in the hatchery, then in the delivery truck, then when they get dumped into the river.

Does NM stock rainbows like TPWD does or are those native fish?

Yes. Most western states stock rainbows, just like TPWD does.

Yes, those are stocker rainbows pictured.

How can one tell a "stocker rainbow" simply from a photo?

Color and size. The hatchery fish are all about the same size and sport a silvery color. Plus rough looking fins. Give them a year in the river and they get the traditional coloring of a native fish.

Awesome pictures as usual. Took the grandson last week to a stocked tank 30 minutes from Austin. Caught 2 and the stocked TPWD rainbows average 10 inches. Gave them to a couple so they could have 3 total. I have yet to cook some up but he told me about grilling them. Thanks again Zia.
