Spooks and Gulp Jerk Shad in son's favorite color nuclear chicken. 2 to 4 foot of water on leeward side of a reef. Fish holding tight to the reef. Son's personal best (20 in.) on the Gulp. Breezy but manageable. Spook blowups common to miss on first hit, but fish would take on 2nd or third slap, sometimes on just a twitch. [img]

Thank you all for the kind words. He's around eight in the avatar and 12 now. He's throwing a level wind pretty good. Need to work on knots now. He had me changing his bait multiple times. At one point, he's cleaning out his spool and has about 30 foot of braid whipping in the wind all knotted up. Fortunately we had brought his mother's reel, which is identical to his except loaded with mono. I changed it to his rod, tied up a new leader and loop knotted the spook. We get into the next drift and a couple of casts in, he's ready to change baits to his nuclear chicken. Breathe deep grasscutter. First couple of casts he nets his best. Can't fault that. Today I asked him what he thought we needed to work on next. He said, "How to tie knots." |

the 50-lb paper-clip style lure clips like "power clips" work well for swapping and fishing inshore lures and rigs, especially if you use light braid with a short, heavy 20- or 25-lb fluoro bite leader.
I smear all the steel and lead on my lures with Pro-cure.
Loop to loop works great, also. And also agree anyone should be able to tie a Uni-knot by feel in the dark. |

I used one of those "power clips", Norton I think, and the first lure I put on it, a Mirrolure suspending bait went flying off and to never been seen again! Needless to say, after the loss of a $5-6 lure on the first cast I have never used one since! |

maybe you misused it?
the only ones I've tried are the ones from Australia - probably the only people crazier than us about fishing, except of course the Japanese. |

Haven't used the clips before. My four go to knots are uni to uni, palomar, trilene, and loop. They work, so I guess we'll start there. Maybe show him palomar first. My grandfather showed me a modified trilene when I was his age. That was 49 years ago. |

Norton, which I use, has two different sizes. Here's a picture of them. Also Roy's has their own that have a double twist. Makes it harder for the lure to come off like Bayfly had a problem with. I've used Norton's for years and not had a problem with it except after using one for months upon months and then it becomes loose fitting for the lure. When that happens I either squeeze it with pliers or just use a new one.

| Speaking of knots to teach your son. After knocking the insert out of the tip guide of a favorite rod, due to using too large of a knot to attach a leader I learned to tie the albright knot, and I understand there is also a "modified albright". The good thing about the albright knot is it is very slim and passes through the guides without any damage. It's easy to tie, especially after you get the hang of it, and I've tied many standing on the deck of the boat, while I'm changing rigs. I use it only to tie a leader to my mainline. Also, no fisherman can be complete without knowledge of the bowline knot. |

of course as a fly fisherman, I've been tying Allbright knots a thousand years and found myself one day in the surf shooting my full fly line plus 20' of backing (using a shooting basket). I only discovered it because I heard this click in my guides - it was my Allbright knot shooting through the guides.
I also use an Allbright knot to tie toothy-fish leaders, 3' of Mason butt to 3' of braided wire, then crimp-sleeve the fly.
But yes, the improved Allbright knot is way superior tying braided line to heavy fluoro leader. I add a small perfection loop to the fluoro bite leader to loop-on a short steel trace or paper clip.
(a perfection loop is also a smaller knot than a surgeon's loop - if you loop braid, use a surgeon's loop because it's stronger, and you don't care about the knot size)
Depending on your size of leader, you can also loop-to-loop your fluoro leader to braid, which lets you tie fluoro to lures, and quickly replace your leader when needed.
