A couple weeks ago I was at the property cutting up a big tree that fell over near my tree stand. I used the chainsaw to cut it up and was tossing the log pieces into a burn pile when I (evidently) tore my rotator cuff. Ouch. For those who are on the fence about getting a cool injury like this, don't do it. My arm is weak and not working well, and next week I'll get an MRI before my doc and I discuss surgery or other options. So Sunday I was feeling a little better and noticed that Monday morning there was no wind in the forecast. I decided that before possible surgery and a long dry spell from fishing, I would take a chance and try paddling gently to see if any reds would play with me. Paddling was weird and slow, but it was working without any pain so I went on out to my target area. Fish were cooperating and I managed a 26 and 28 for dinner, and released several barely legals, along with a toad just over 29 inches. Casting the 4 weight is kind of comical because my arm is so weak I am limited to casting inside of 30 feet. Oh well, after a successful trip I'm back at work and feeling good ...with fish in the fridge for dinner tonight.

Surgery sucks. Avoid it if you can. I had my whole right shoulder torn (it was just hanging by threads). I could not lift my arm level with my shoulder without help. It still give me fits, and is weak at times. Over 4 years ago now. _________________ Shane |

it's pretty simple, and you need to be able to anyway, start casting with the other arm....switch it...

| Becky, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. I'll start trying this and see if I can't get the hang of fishing with the wrong hand, lol! |

I've had the surgery on both shoulders. Honestly, the improvement was not all that was expected and now arthritis is an issue. |

| I had the opposite result with my rotator cuff repair. My arm is like new again and I am very happy that I had surgery. Not being able to fish for 3 months was the suck, though. |

| A positive outcome of a shoulder or ankle surgery is unusual. I've damaged or done something to my shoulders many times over the years, but each time I just took it easy for an extended period and the problem has always gone away. That is not to say it has not risen it's head again, but after having an unsuccessful ankle surgery I'm not the first to look to surgery for anything. I have a friend who has had both shoulders worked on twice and one of them three times! Good luck with your decision. |

After multiple surgeries, I figured out: Cut that wood up smaller.
And buy the more expensive small bags of sackcrete. Good luck on recovery! |

When I get back close to normal, that's my plan! |

| A Prof good luck with your rotator cuff injury. But the old adage when given lemons make lemonade and you sure did. Looks like they'll be no offshore paddles for a while. |

Agreed. My dad used to play baseball competitively (at semi-pro level in fact - long before I was even a twinkle in his eye ) and he broke several bones in his right hand. He learned to be ambidextrous and started throwing and batting left handed for a while. While it never became his dominant hand, he can still do it to this day - including fishing. And I agree it's something most fishing folks should study up on for similar reasons, even though I myself am guilty of not trying to practice enough. _________________ All things will pass. I hope the surgery goes well and you're out back doing 15 mile runs beyond the breakers! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Thanks Tyler, me too! For now I'll be happy to just get back into the flats and slay some more reds with the buggy whip. Water is my happy place. |

I feel for ya.
I'm just getting over a total reverse shoulder replacement.
Hopefully because you are younger,, you will heal faster. DO whatever the PT tells you, don't overdo it on even putting your belt through the loops.
The hardest part is learning to use your left hand(bathroom).
Hope you are back on the kayak soon,, oh, don't believe all the surgeon tells you. Was told 9 months healing,, just now at 3 months and am on the kayak,, just not far yet.
Prayers sent. |
