Having lived in CC almost all of my life (except for Naval service) and spending a lot of that time fishing, surfing and SCUBA diving in all saltwater areas, I can't believe I don't know the answer to this question:
Will Hurricane Dorian bearing down on Florida as a CAT 4 storm affect our local GOM surf and inland waters?
I obviously know the effects when there's a hurricane in the GOM but never paid attention to the effects, if any, when a hurricane is that far away.
I appreciate your responses.
I miss my buddy Stan. _________________ HooYah!

no - storm tides are driven by the winds coming onshore east of the eye.
If you're west of the storm, you get rain bands after they've rotated through their inland spiral.
After Harvey came ashore, the remnant eye traveled through Schertz, NE of San Antonio. The west side of SA didn't even get rain.
Some time in the 90s, when a TD made landfall down the coast, we didn't have big wind, but had some great storm-tide fishing on San Jose Island airboat trails (by Majek) - we found jacks and baby tarpon in The Bottleneck between Fence and Allyn's lakes. |

First hand testimony to this here. I evacuated to my old man's place in NW San Antonio. We didn't get more than a passing thunderstorm, while my mom in Lockhart (which the remnants passed almost smooth over) got record rainfall and wind, and it destroyed much of her fence.
But yeah, most models currently agreeing Dorian is gonna swing up the east coast due to a high pressure system moving in over the mainland just as it bears down on FL...I don't think we're going to see much of any of it. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

We were waiting for the big rains that never came from Harvey.
The Weather Channel and local news told us to expect up to 20+ in some places in West SA.
We had lots of family evacuate from Corpus and we are in San Antonio off HWY 90 going towards Castroville.
Swirling winds, light drizzle and that was about it.
On a different note I don't rely on the Weather Channel anymore they have sensationalized everything about weather and when they can they throw in political PC crap. I rely on the Drunk Donkey a.k.a 'Mike' @ Mike's Weather Page (spaghetti models)...
I can receive all I require to be informed on weather and his own take and live feeds on big weather events and he is more reliable than the "look at me weather fools." Just my soapbox rant.

... | Haby's Bakery and Djiuk's dried venison sausage. (they can offer venison from feral Axis deer).
Some of the best bass sight-fishing in Texas is the confluence of the Frio and Sabinal rivers, about 20 mi south of Sabinal. And you can eat Alvin's Pepper Steak at Hermann Son's Steakhouse on the drive home.
sorry for the thumb.

Thanks for the relevant replies. Not sure why bass and sausage pics are there but will go with the flow. Headed to the beach within the hour to fish the tide change, smoke a good cigar and sip some Black Seal rum to celebrate my 69th birthday. Crowds will determine where I stop. _________________ HooYah!

after the correct answer, what's left except chatting with Friends about common interests
A fly fisherman like dawnpatrolvet with a landing in Castroville should know about the drive west. Aside from sight-fishing 5-lb bass, there are cichlids the size of footballs.
Can't remember the name of the cigar shop off Staples, but could land there, because they carry my Illusiones.
you might want to know about Matusalem 23 to go with that cigar - the 15 won a blind taste test over HC7 and Varadero in a get together of habanos collectors, the 18 is great, and no words for the 23. Before Castro, Matusalem was the best in Cuba, and the distiller fled to DR.
Rum, btw, is the only distilled spirit that gets better after you open the bottle, or the longer you let it sit in your glass.

Even though it's on the east coast it will still send Texas tides higher. Last time a system was off the east coast we were in Palacios at a Bayside rental. The jetties surrounding the marsh were under water for two days. I don't think I would go way down the seashore at this time.

I know Habys and Dzuicks well we hit Castroville often. Running through my calendar to hit it during the cooler weather and thank you for the suggestions.

in that photo next to the sausage, bro, I'm throwing a size 8 cats whisker:
I tie these in a lot of different color combos, all green, all grey, grey body and tail with light olive wing, tan body and tail with brown or rust wing - pretty sure I was fishing that last color combo.

same fly in size 6 is my striper fly for the Guadalupe.
It's actually kind of a joke to ask me what fly I'm fishing - cats whisker is my go-to for warmwater fishing. |

Once this tropical storm passes the water will drop from the bays sending bait like finger mullet out of the passes and into the Gulf kicking off the fall redfish run in the surf. With the redfish will be spanish mackerel, bluefish, trout, ladyfish, a few kings, lots of pup blacktips, and possibly tarpon. Billy Sandifer told me historically the best chance at catching a tarpon on Padre Island National Seashore is the first two weeks in September.
