Small debate here at work. Is it safe to clean fish on treated wood? I have used the same cleaning table for about eight years with no problems but, some people here think it is not safe. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen one made of wood that was not treated.

Thats what I thought. Some people sure know how to lose twenty bucks in a hurry. Thanks ironman cause it was your cleaning table that brought up this debate. I wanted to put one together like yours and several people up here said I wuz crazy for using treated lumber. I preciate it.

Some treated wood contains Arsenic. Arsenic contains very heavy metals that are poisonous. Who knows how long it would take to poison you? Treated lumber is a "building material" and should not be used to prepare food on. I would not use it. Shocked

Look it up for your self. I know I've built several decks with treated lumber and they all came with a warning! Ask for the "MSDS" for that lumber at the store where you bought the lumber.

Sam's has these large cutting boards that would work great for the top of that table. Mine is 18 x 24. Plastic Supply in San Antonio can cut you a table top made out of that plastic used for cutting boards. Call them 210.222.8091

I would have to agree with BigDaddy1.

You can't use treated lumber in area where ther are children. Cutting or sanding due to the dust.

IMS would be like using galvanized in a BBQ pit. Wouldn't take a rack out of freg and use it in BBQ.

The plastic idea sounds good though.

I figure i'm ok as long as i dont eat my cleaning table or chew on treated lumber. Starboard or a nice sheet of 3/8 or 1/2 in would make an excellent table top. I could be wrong but 90% of the cleaning tables i have seen are of the wolmanized variety. The others are cooler tops tailgates, pinic tables, cutting boards are to small for most of the fish i catch. A wood surface keeps the fish from sliding around very much especially when your cleaning a dozen or more at a time. I'll bring it up sat. night when i'm frying fish and get some replies . My fillets dont lay on the table very long anyway i put them back in the filthy nasty sink. Very Happy

I would use starboard for the top but I would have to catch way to many fish to pay for it. Anyone else have any ideas for the top other than treated wood? I will call about the plastic thanks for the number and all of the input. Fish on.

Some of you suggested plastic so I'll share this.

I read a study that said wood is a far superior food prep material to plastic. The reason is bacteria can live and thrive on most artificial surfaces, but wood is naturally cleaned. The study said it wasn't certain why this was the case, if the wood killed it or if for some reason bacteria didn't like it, but they found wood to be consistantly cleaner even if scrubbed with soap and hot water.

I guess it really doesn't matter though unless your eating it raw.

I was lucky enough to come across a large piece of Lexan (white cutting board) long ago thats 24" X 24", large enough to do most fish.....most cutting tables at all of your boat ramps are treated if you'll think about it...

sometimes when the board is dirty I'll throw cardboard or newspaper over it and clean that way......

either way, I haven't cleaned a fish in almost 5 days, and I'm getting itchy for this weekend!!!
