Ok here are 4 stories in one.
1 is Man Im a DUMB A$$
1 is a condition report that has since passed I hope and a Fish tale ouch.
1 is people are so @#$#$#$%

Ok here goes. Didn't get to do the 3 day 2 nighter in April, calendar has been full. Almost same in May.. Was sitting at work on a Tuesday night (2AM) looking at tide charts and such and comparing our weekend obligations. 4th, 11th, 18th all obligated, hmm 23-25 tides high during day seems great lets do it. (DUMB A$$) me didnt notice that it was memorial day weekend.
Any way tidal surge had PINS closed until sometime after 4pm on 23rd. Was at Malaquite station when I heard warning lifted and they were going to open for driving. Went around cones and took off. Really REALLY rough going but went down to Yarburough (sp?) pass area. Set up out of the way of the one lane you could get through right up against the dunes. Took over an hour to set up the tent winds were so High.
HMMMMM surf so rough not sure if anything could even be there. This is 630 pm. Set up camp threw out one pole (just had to) ate relaxed, bed at 11pm.
2. Daylight ,,, time to get up. Surf still really bad, wind really strong. Not much of a bite. A couple of huge whiting 18+ inches. Red almost legal but not. Giant hard heads ( have friends that like to eat them). AND THEN the fight was on and then it wasn't. Something started slowly bending the new 12" pole completely over once, twice, 3 times, no drag pulling though kind of odd. Pulled it out of the holder tightened the drag just a little and hauled back. Only succeeded in pulling line off with the drag. Grabbed the spool and hauled back again, Like trying to haul in a giant log. Figured maybe sting ray. Tightend the drag a little bit more and grabbed the spool again and hauled back same thing no movement, except now whatever is there, is pissed off and now starts stripping line off the reel, funny thing though after about 10-15 yards of line run out there is a BIG thump on the line and then nothing. I reeled it in and the line was cut off above the leader. Had 80 lb mono leader setup with 30lb spider wire line on a triple swivel but the entire leader was gone. Figure it must have been a pretty big shark and got cut of by the tail. Help me out here I cant think of anything else.
3. I dont go anywhere EVER on Memorial day weekend no in the last 30 years or so anyway.
Coming off PINS on saturday there were idiots parked in the only diveable area trying to fish, there was a party of about 8 cars parked all the way into the tide run, on and on and on and on WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
Got up off the sand and headed off the island and the incoming traffic was backed up for 10-15 miles bumper to bumper. MAN IM A DUB A$$$$
no wonder I never go anywhere on memorial day. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

it was a really good weekend to ride a bike - I think all the yeyhoos went to the beach.
a kayaker apparently trying to cross the channel to LHL was killed by a hit-and-run power boater - and yes, the wind was 20-kt |

| Sometimes before a shark takes off for the initial run it will roll to try and shake the hook out of its mouth. This could have been the initial thumps you were seeing. I played it dumb as well and went to bob hall pier area. Not to fish but just to throw some bumpers to the dog in the surf. Beach was PACKED. |

Beach was indeed, packed. Nearly everybody parallel parked by the dunes, leaving for a 'narrow' traffic lane between the oncoming surf/chairs/rods/kids and all manner of beach-goers for yet another Amateur Hour over the long Holiday Weekend.
What I found most surprising was, that south of Bob Hall, the trash left behind wasn't anything like the mess that the googans made of the Newport Pass section of the reclaimed State Park. And you can't even spend the night there!!!! A round of applause for the folks down to at least the Bowl, and a Pox on the house for the slobs up north. |

We had planned on camping Friday night into Monday but we wernt ready and the surf and tides looked pretty rough. We will be out this Friday night though.
Sounds kind of like Sharkathon. I got my butt kicked SOOOO hard by the surf. The next weekend was so smooth I could have put those little kid arm floaties on my ankles and waled to Cuba. |

| Been in the same boat a few times. My desire to be on the beach fishing outweighs my common sense and head to the coast anyway. There have been a couple times where I have said hell with it driven down from Dallas, spent a night and then come home. |
