Hey everyone, new to the Corpus area. Grew up flats fishing in Florida so I'm glad to be in a place that still offers that.
I dont see much on people fishing NAS Corpus, which is where I have been fishing 99% of the time. I've pulled some bull red, decent trout, flounder, and a bunch of other crap up so far. I haven't explored much elsewhere just because I'm lazy and this is close. I also notice some areas get pretty crowded and I tend to avoid being overwhelmed by other anglers.
I've been having the most luck on soft plastics with darker colors and the chartreuse tails. Have had absolutely no luck using spoons so far.
Any input on some areas that are fish able in this area near the base are appreciated. I've heard about OSO bay but not really sure exactly where to go. Just park anywhere along that stretch of road and cast out? Or should I be focused on the bridge? Thought I could beat the crowd today, on a weekday, and there were already a ton of cars around the bridge.

| I was discouraged when I first got here fishing red dot, cosway and the bay. Went to PINS and never looked back. I would encourage you to expand your area a bit and check out PINS. Real game changer for me as far as atmosphere and all around fun. |

I had the same experience. I will fish the bays both wading and from my boat, but there's no place like Padre! There's a special place in my heart for that beach, always will be _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Piers and lights are great when one gets started but they are crowded and limit an angler from experiencing what the laguna and beach have to offer. There is so much more out there to learn and find and catch.
Learn to read the water for signs of life. Learn where redfish and trout should be and when they should be there and what effects them moving. That's one of the biggest hurdles. We happen to be in the right place one time and kill it, then the rest of the time most people are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also learn about currents, not just tidal currents but other things that cause current like wind driven current, and even barge traffic. When the tide is slack learning where that is happening can be killer.
Start off my learning what structure is for redfish and what structure is for trout. Structure is mostly either something that holds baitfish or gives the fish an advantage to strike baitfish. Grass edges, potholes in the grass, slightly deeper parts of a flat that is a mud bottom, and old gut or ditch running up into a flat are all examples of structure. Find bait or orther forage on that structure and fish that area when the water is moving and you're going to catch fish... lures don't matter near as much as learning the above and I even say that as a tackle manufacturer. Lures are only a 'wrench' and understanding how to fix the flywheel is much more important. The right tool for the job is important but there are lots of tools that work. Be less focused on using the right lure and more focused on finding the fish and understanding why they are where they are and that is usually becuase of the food. The lions don't stray to far from the gazzles.

I've caught the biggest red fish ever on this little beach, and not a single fish since, other than small stuff. This is what frustrates me, they were both caught on a setting sun but other than that just a normal day. No crazy tides, and no crazy structure as far as I'm aware.
My second spot is abandoned wet slips, so you would think its loaded with activity due to the lack of human activity but its so hit or miss. I've caught trout, reds, flounder, ribbon fish, and pin fish there, nothing is ever in the slot it seems. Some days I can throw anything I have and its fish on, other days its dead.
I've also made it out to PINS but I was "that guy" who just drove for miles until I found a quiet section alone and then went at it, no luck. Not realizing how important it is to actually read the surf/guts/etc. |

| PINS can be a bit hard to find any real distinguishing differences, at least for me since there are rips all the way down the beach. All of the videos I have seen seem to be from the east coast where rips are a little less abundant and really stick out. One thing I do is first look for signs of birds and baitfish, then find a rip current in close proximity to them. |
