|
|
I was fortunate enough to get to go offshore fishing last weekend out of south padre, and we caught a blackfin tuna. Last night we ate said blackfin tuna, the plan was to sear it on the outside and have it raw inside. I had frozen it for several days, defrosted it, and was cleaning up a few spots of blood/skin when I noticed some semi-translucent, round orb looking things in random places in the meat. Not a lot of them, maybe around a dozen or so. I'm familiar with the white worms in trout, drum, etc., I just pick out what I can and then cook the fish thoroughly on those and don't worry about it. Imagine taking the round head of the white worms in trout, removing the tail, making it more round, and then semi-transparent, and slightly larger than the white trout worms, and that's what they looked like. I picked out what I saw, but assumed I probably missed a few so ended up cooking the tuna pretty much all the way through as I didn't want my entire family to end up with intestinal parasites.
Anybody know what these things are, and if they are dangerous to humans? I did some interweb searching, and came up with inconclusive results, so thought I'd bring this question to the real experts - the corpusfishing.com forum. |

Well, I've been catching, cleaning and eating both Yellowfin and Blackfin for the better part of 25 years and have never seen such a thing.
Sorry that I can't help you. |

l saw one yellowfin we cleaned on a Nyati trip 8 or 9 years ago that had red and pink round sores all throughout the meat. On the outside the fish looked normal but we tossed it. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| as a sushi chef for many years , it is not uncommon to find the parasite just as you described in yellowfin and big eye tuna. usually I see them one at a time, and we carefully cut around it. good idea to freeze fish to be consumed raw for 10 days. that is our industry standard. bon appetite ! Eric ? when are you coming to the sushi bar ? |

Interesting! I did not know it was usually frozen before consumed. My buddys eat piles of it raw! I eat some but not like they do. |
