If anyone hits the beach this week please post on the water conditions. If things improve I am heading down on Friday. If they stay the same I am not sure it will be worth the drive and may wait until the 27th to head down.

I was there this weekend.

2 wheel drive all the way down to the jetties. (a couple of spots were soft) The rains yesterday probably packed it in even more.

Surf so flat that you couldn't read it, except for the color changes (clarity down south was 9/10, northern end 6/10, but clearing) and mosquitos/biting flies did there best to carry you off.

Fishing was tough. Lots of skip jack, whiting and hardheads. No reds/trout to speak of. Some guides caught some drum from their boats and the end of the Mansfield jetties on live croaker.

Still some of that white seaweed on the northern end, didn't see any further south, past the 25 mile.

Regardless of anything, I would say get out there and get right. It always works for me.

God Bless,

Would it posssible to make it down to the 25mm with a honda CRV? I really want to get out there and avoid the clear bryozoans.

The way I saw it Sunday night, yes - just go at low tide. Not long ago, 22-23 was a mushy as all get out area, and I turned around several times, now that was not at low tide and i drive a subie - all wheel drive.

Just remember, stuff changes out there a lot, but there has been nothing but some rain that has happened since Sunday night, and that will pack down the sand.

I was close to 25 mm Sunday evening, and the nasty stuff, the sea snot - was definitely there - but it was considerably less -- than around 18-19. And i dont think anyone knows where that stuff is coming from nor the direction its moving. The place I fished where there was none of it - this is in the last 7 days - was around 45 or so - and then south of the 50.

I am in the process of talking myself into making a run out there this evening - and right now, I am winning that discussion. And of course, I will report what I see - what i have been doing since this nasty caca started showing is driving down by the water line - and trying to spot it. It can be hard to see - but one cast - and you freaking know.

I went to the 35 and back, both today and yesterday( Monday and Tuesday), and the driving conditions are very good. Water clarity was better yesterday than today, but overall could clear some.
Fishing was better yesterday, with 9 solid trout caught between 3 of us. We managed 14 total.
Today I caught 3 smallish keepers.
All were caught on Carolina rigged croaker.

Oh and to the honda crv question....yup. I was in a ford escape today and passed a minivan at the 20. My front wheel drive never made me worry today. Lots of washouts made for a bumpy ride through

What about seaweed, snot or otherwise ? Did you encounter any ? And what time of day were you landing those trout ?

I went again today and the water was looking better. Had one of those crazy surf experiences at that boat at about the 35.5... First cast a trout, next a red, next a skippy, next a hard head, next a black drum. I guess everybody wants on the croaker train.
Only caught one trout over 20 today, and it was barely over.
That thai glass noodle snot weed is there, but not that big of a deal on a c-rig. Most times the weight and swivel had some , but the bait was usually clean.
All fishing done between 20 and 40 between 7am and when the croaker ran out...around noon

I fished saturday and sunday, from 18 to the 24 or so - and saw no sea snot. Fishing was a bit spotty, but that was probably just me. Caught whiting enough for multiple meals both days, and a nice slot red on a gold johnson sprite.

Had several break offs - which I blame on frayed line - will be replacing whatever I was using with pesci braid shortly. The break offs - were a hard hit - short run, then as the fight started , line goes slack, same rig. Nick Meyers came by and his opinion it was spanish macks cutting the line - the line was cut above the leader - so quien sabe. Anyway, fish are out there - like someone said, if there is a weakness in your gear, the fish down pins will find it.

The good news was that as of Sunday early afternoon - between 17-18 and 24 or so, didnt find any sea snot - and I watched rigs that were cast out from camps as I headed out, and didnt see any - though there were a lot of pretty disgusting visuals of things nastier than sea snot once I got north of the 5.

We may have passed each other. I made it down early Friday afternoon and set up camp a mile or 2 south of Yarborough pass. Fished there Friday and caught plenty of whiting.

Headed south to the jetties on Sat morning and got stuck just past the 40. Stayed stuck for about an hour and a half and fished while contemplating my exit, caught a bunch of whiting and a gafftop. While stuck Rebecca of Sunnybrooke Farm stopped by and we chatted.

Determined to get out I finally freed myself and made it to the jetty. Water was clear but colder as you hit waist deep water. Had a good time hanging with Rebecca and crew for a few hours at the jetty and another spot a few miles up before I went back to camp. Fished for a few hours and caught nothing but whiting. Didn't see any sea snot all weekend.

Packed up Sunday AM and headed back to DFW. Quick trip but always worth it to get a little time on the island

I should have gone to the jetties on saturday, but had the misfortune of catching a nice slot red on my first cast, and then assuming it was because I was doing something right, instead of just being lucky.

Were you about 45 when you got stuck , there was a nasty place there. Very narrow beach, high mushy sand.

good times, good meeting you...that's what friends and shovels are for!

my beach and jetty report is non-existent; there was nothing there but dirty, cold water...I caught a gafftop on a lure somewhere in the 30's, and pretty much gave up after that...
