Good afternoon forum family,
We started driving from Mexico at 4 am and arrived to CC around 8.30am after a quick leg stretch, we googled restaurants and because my friends wanted Mexican food (we are coming from a place where there is plenty of it) and I wanted cracked barrel, we opted for Jalisco taqueria in cimarron blvd. It was good and good prices too. We proceeded to red dot pier to buy bait. We arrived to the pier a little before 10 am. We proceeded to the end (t). It was basically empty. Only about 15 souls in it. Surf was rough and water was like chocolate milkshake. Right side was still closed. We got 5 rods out between the 3 of us. Double drop bottom, shark rig, slide line with cork, ready bottom rig, and free lining. Bait used, shrimp, squid, live bait we caught at the pier with small hooks (croacker, pin fish, etc), manhaden, finger mullet, fishbites (sandworm, clam, shrimp, and ez squid) and crab. We fished until 5 pm. It was hardhead and gafftop galore. On everything!!! Including fishbites. Each of us probably caught 40 of them. My friends started to call them cucarachas del mar. Peole came and went around the pier, and we continued fishing with our hopes high of landing something worth it. The shark rod started screaming, as I was fishing it in free spool with clicker....then nothing. The manhadden was bitten in half. We decided to pack and cruise the beach, which was packed with 4th of juliers. We stopped by the jetties, but it was not too busy either. We headed to eat at Virginias at the bay for a good meal like always. Blackened mahi mahi was awesome. We then stopped by dolphin docks to check out the catch for the sat 12 hr. It was great!!!! I wanted to make that trip, but my friends decided pier since they have not been ever deep fishing and afraid of sea motion sickness. A huge bull mahi was caught. Probably over 50 in. A lot of red snappers (over 100), six small sharks, 6 or 8 bonitas, a dozen king fish all regular size nothing spectacular, and other small mahi mahi. A few bottom fish too. We started driving back. We went went thorugh the town of Cotulla Tx we were surprised to see a 4th of July celebration on Saturday june 30th. Parade, fireworks, food stands, the whole enchilada. We stopped in a gas station to buy coffee, and attendants mentioned that city counsel decided to celebrate early since 4th of july is going to be on a wednesday. We arrived safe at home at 12.30 am. Hopefully I will see you soon at the island when work and family allows. Since I have a two month old at home, my time is limited.

Seems every year somebody comes up with a better name for them! I LOVE it!
Glad you had a good time, even though the chocolate milkshake brought in the cucarachas. You need to convince your friends a little more about those offshore trips, they really can be quite the experience. Typically the summer trips are a lot calmer and a lot less likely you'll get sick-provoking conditions. Usually you'll always see 5 or 10 people aboard spend every minute in the cabin, and those are the ones that always get sick. Go outside, breathe the sea air, you'll have fun! When you're all limited out, you start catching fish for the rest of the boat.
Also, I know for a fact that the captains at Dolphin Dock WILL NOT go out in seas that they know will cause more than 1/3 of the boat to get sick...so yeah, they don't want your trip ruined either!
C'mon back when you get a chance. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
