I am considering adding a long length of mono leader material ahead of the actual leader for abrasion resistance. I have a 2ft length on my leader ahead of a wire leader on the hook.
In short for bigger fish 30-100 lb will an fg know work to connect braid to mono. I usually use heavy swivels but Im going to be surf fishing and thought maybe because of the sand and possibility of hooking into a shark I might need 10-15 feet of mono ahead of the 3 ft leader.
Im just not convinced that an FG or any other castable knot will be strong enough. Let me know what you think. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things )

But a line to line knot will no give up enough to matter?
I have looked at all of the different knots and think the FG offers the best casting ability along with touted best strength overall.
I can give up a lot in ease and time IF it gains castability and strength. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things )

What does the fg stand for ? I have the instructions on tying it - but the palomar and the double uni is what I have been using for a while. Looks like the fg might be easier to tie - so i better give it a try. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy.

I always used the uni knot to tie my leaders on to my main line. Now I use the triple surgeon's knot which is a lot easier to type. But that's on short pieces of flouro. Don't know about the length you're asking about and going through the guides.
I use a uni tied on to a big knot on 60lb mono for surf rigs. This FG knot looks pretty cool for trout rods if you don't want to use a swivel between your braid and leader.

because its a thin castable knot thats supposedly stronger than the rest. Casting being the key word.
I used to think braid was tough as far as abrasion but after watching various tests on youtube I learned better. Thought in the surf I needed a little longer length of mono than just what the leader allows. Along with the fact that the braid kills my finger, thought the mono might help. But now I picked up a couple of the breakaway cannons to help with that problem.
I have always done it with a swivel but cant reel in a swivel on a long topshot. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things )
I've used the FG knot for my windon leader to catch amber jack and black fin tuna on the party boat. I don't know the weight of the amber jack; but the black fin were around 15-20lb. FG knot is good, but takes some practice to get it right, especially while on the water.

I use the fg for all leader connections unless I'm doing some type of loop connection like a bimini. If you put the rod in a holder with the main line taught it is easier to tie.

I didnt realize that the FG and Sebile knots are the same. Ive used the Sebile for tying 65lb braid to a 130lb mono leader for 6 years now. Caught a nice blacktip and a pretty big stingray on it. Also had quite a few hits and big runs on it and they have held up good.

I've been using the FG knot for a couple of years now on all my tuna rigs (conventional and spinning) that I have a topshot on. It's stronger and smaller than the uni to uni.
But it does take more time to tie. If I have a malfunction in the heat of a hot yellowfin bite I will just use a crazy alberto or uni to uni.

actually I think the Sebile and the FG are slightly different knots. similar principle but slightly different.
F G F****** Good knot LOL.
It takes a little practice to tie right but I think once you've got it, you can tie a really good knot. it can wear down being passed back and forth through the guides a bunch and I hear of an occasional wear out due to that.. but if you use a fresh leader each trip or weekend it should be ok.
Go with a knot that you can tie with wet hands in the last 15 minutes of light while standing on wet jetty rocks in a 20 mph wind with fish rolling in front of you.
