Took a run down the beach New Year's Eve after getting home from the tug in Chicago. The hunkering down around here with this weather we've had the last week and a half has been something else.

Chicago. The area that gave us....well we'd better just leave that one alone. Laughing

The new fee station is looking awesome. It's going to be really nice when it's done that's for sure.

And the beach was....flat!

And I stopped to wish I had brought the boat for a run.

Down a few miles, I came across the first flounder that I can remember seeing washed up.

Well, lookie here.

Nippy!

"Turkey wing" shell!

Double-crested cormorant! Winter residents!

And the reason for the ride....to look at the damage that the fire did. Again-googans and their campfires blowing embers into the dunes.

All burnt....and I had to wonder if the bunch that started it felt bad about all the damage it caused in a time of year when food is already scarce for the animals.

What a shame.

Burnt for mile and miles south, all the way up to the foredune ridge.

Some burnt, some not.

Camphor weed, all burnt, but other camphor weed untouched.

And the bay was so high...

And the new waders were worth every penny. Swore I'd never ever wear the Billy boots but here I am....oh well, at least a snake can't get through 'em.

Fished for a few hours, nothing too much going on in the cold hours of the morning.

Headed off early. Ya'll stay warm, and Happy New Year.

The fire result is saddening, but fortunenately nature heals in time. Your jacket/hood combination looks interesting. I guess that is standard boat captain wear, but please advise us who makes it? I can't help but wonder what happened to the flounder, any indication? Stay warm!

Looks both beautiful and chilly. As always, enjoy your posts.

I was unaware that there was a fire. When and where did it happen?

Heya Bill, hope you and the Mrs. had good holidays and a Happy New Year...the jacket you were asking about is really just the only hoodie I've got laying around, underneath a new pair first pair of Simms waders and boots. Best money I've spent in a long while I'd say. Had to run around on charter last month in leaky waders all day with cold water in 'em so I guess I broke down and opened up the wallet. Dunno what sealed the fate of that fat flounder, but I've heard tales of targeting them out on the 2nd bar, now wouldn't that be cool.

Gus, hey brother-there were others down there when it happened that would know, but it's at least over a week and a half ago now, if not a tad longer.

I too wasn't aware there was a fire, when and how far down did this happen?

Also can anyone tell me what the offshore structures are in the 5th pic? I have been wondering what they are/were used for since my first trip to PINS over 5 years ago. I assume something to do with offshore drilling but not what they are or were.
