so, Topdog and I were talking yesterday, and the subject of tiderunners came up....we figured out that there might be some misunderstanding about the origin of the term tiderunners, namely, does it refer exclusively to fish that come from the surf into the bay, or does it simply refer to fish that are coming from south to north (i.e. up the ICWW)....

what is y'all's definition of tiderunners?

Definitely the first one, although I've thought it applied to those fish that were primarily in the surf (although the genetics studies don't make a compelling case for 'surf-only' trout).

I've always heard schooling trout travel 25 mi/day in and out of the bays as they migrate up and down the coast. Seems consistent with the way I've been onto schoolies, in the surf at passes, the jetties, in passes off deep channels, or riding the tide onto a flat, etc.
We waited for them at an 11' platform one October dawn near where Aransas and Copano meet, and when they showed up, turned the fish-finder black.

Dolphins will follow schoolies into the bay, and while a dolphin in your cast will shut down the fishing, it's a good sign schoolies are around. We usually run to the next reef to look for them.

The reds we catch in the bays are juveniles - the destiny of every redfish is the Gulf.
Likewise, there are 3 kinds of trout - nursery trout, which live here. Their destiny is to join a school and move in and out of the Gulf. When you're filleting your schoolies, note that most of them are males. Then are lone big females in the winter, staking out breeding turf.

I can tell you this . I went out on the front porch just a few minutes ago for the first time since I got home. That sunshine felt most excellent on my face. I might have to try it again in about an hour. Also what are they surveying behind my house?

are they staying in that easement where we put the piping for the lift station, or are they wandering around all over the place?

Well heck, When I first saw the subject of this thread I thought I might read some ideas of what others thoughts were about tiderunners.

Nope, but I did learn someone is painting the sand on property behind IMS's house orange.

LMAO!!

Always thought tiderunners referred to an influx of fish from the gulf with spring high tides.

storm tides, too.
Fishing a storm tide years ago, we found jacks and baby tarpon in the bottleneck - the airboat trail between Fence Lake and Allyn's Lake.

yes, that's typically the correct definition....however, I've heard the term used in a variety of places no where near a pass, and used in reference to trout working their way north to south in the ICWW...

Just my opinion, but think fish could come in say Packery channel and be at Baffin in a day or two.

the reason schooling specs travel 25 mi/day is so the school can find enough food.
