I've become accustomed to seeing all manner of pets brought to the beach, especially during Spring Break as a way to get people to notice you. Seen creatures ranging from parrots, macaws, lizards, snakes, even an owl once Shocked ; but yesterday north of Packery, was a first.

Group of girls had a cat with them at the beach!! Not on a leash or anything, just running around the vehicle and enjoying the sand!!! Now I've seen everything.

If we did that , I would be afraid (but hoping) the thing would run away. And then I would have to pretend in front of my wife that I was trying to find it and then - on top of that, have to act sad, that it got in the dunes - and is now being eaten.

And yes, I know, I am a jerk.

We have a 1 year old cat that we walk every evening. Started taking him out at about 6 months old, he loves it.

Not loose mind you, we have a harness/leash for him. Rides good in the car too, surprisingly.

I thought about taking him to the beach, but we haven't yet. I rarely go down there anymore.

Not a jerk son, just fairly normal, IMHO. Everyone has a right to like whatever animals they choose. Never have seen much in my almost 63 years that compares with a good dog, which I'd rather have around me than most people!

My ex wife was a cat person when I met her, and acted like a cat: independent, aloof and surly. By the time I left her for someone MUCH better (12 years too late), she had become a lab lover to the point that when I took my dog, she went out and got a Lab puppy!

No offense meant to any cat owning men out there either. I HAVE known a few cats that were kind of nice, but a VERY few! Wink

I think you just described 1 of the 2 cats I have!!! The Calico fits that perfectly. I'm the ONLY one in the family she will socialize with. The other is a 17+ lb Maine Coon who just loves everybody ..... save for the Calico, who avoids everybody (and hates the other cat Twisted Evil ), but tolerates the 2 dogs.... Go figure??? Cool

Sam is my 4 legged partner and I agree with what you said about preferring a decent dog over just about anyone. He is always happy, damn happy to see me, no matter what. That being said, he loves everyone and he expects that everyone loves him. He was gone once for 7 days (he is 9 years old, we got him as a pup), apparently someone - who also had a white suburban, was at the post office. Sam was standing by that vehicle, the door came open, it was full of kids, like mine always was, and sam said, 'that'l do' and jumped in and sat down, like he always did. They went home - and he was fine. The dad saw one of the 10,000 or so posters i put up - or the ads on facebook - this was about 6 years ago or so. They called me, I drove over , Sam is in their yard playing with the kids, I get out of my car, he sees me, says to himself, 'oh, ok, time to go' and runs and jumps in my white suburban, sits down. And we went home. sfb, i swear, but he is Sam. The books say Catahoolas are extremely smart, good hunters, very loyal, and great family dogs. One out of 4 of those are correct. Smart, he aint, i cant imagine him hunting, he is loyal but to anyone that walks by. But he is one of the family.

I'm thinking our cat may be part Maine Coon after doing some research. Fluffs of hair in between toes, and a poofy tail like I've never seen before!

He's very dog-like as well.

I had a big 14 lb part Siamese that loved people. She was a great cat and great pet. Really lovable. I really miss that cat. I have had great cats and dogs, and some not so great over my 62 yrs. My ex wife's cat hated me and everyone except her, and was just like landlocked beachbum described his ex's cat. Just like humans, there are good and bad. Just how nature is I reckon.

So here is my Sam dog fishing addition. Sam was a lab mixed part of the family. I would take Sam ice fishing with me. When ice fishing with tipups when you get a bite the flag goes up. Then you slip slide over to the hole and bring your fish in by hand over hand retrieve.
Sam soon learned that a flag meant get the fish. Sam would monitor all fishermen within a mile radius. Any flag meant action required. He would gallop over to any nearby fisherman. As soon as they would unhook their fish an flip them on the ice Sam would happily retrieve them to me. Sam and I would stroll back to return the fish to its rightful owner. Many folks were totally amazed at the fish stealing retrieving Sam. Often people would say why do you bother drilling holes. Just sit in the truck and let Sam catch your limit.
